Preparing for GMAT has been stated by many to be a drudgery especially because of its precarious nature. The GMAT exam preparation is more like a Tom and Jerry tale where you always end up not getting the right answer of a question or in an entangled in a problem. And if you are somebody preparing it all yourself then it is another height of complexity. In the midst of all these, there are few mistakes that the students make which makes the whole process even more severe.
Let us find the remedy of all of them:
Don’t jeopardize by giving it a single shot: heard it right, one does not have to overdo it during the exam because GMAT is one of those occasional exams which can be re-attempted if anyhow your exam didn’t go well you can try for it again after 16 days. Though the only stress factor is, it is going to cost one a lump sum. One way to avoid this problem is to opt for mock tests or diagnostic tests twice or thrice. This will not only ensure proper preparation but also the student will be able to understand the loopholes.
There’s always a way out: rightly told, this is very much applicable to students whose scores are on a lesser scale. GMAT allows the student to undergo five attempts in a single year. So, if the opportunity to sit for it a second time approaches – one must always consider it as it will open another door to their dream university. Retakes are therefore a must.
Say no to overconfidence: this is very much applicable for students scoring pretty well in their mock tests and assuming that they will perform in the same way in their main exam. Another tricky phenomenon about GMAT exams is, as it is a computer-adaptive test, steady scores here do not necessarily mean you are improving but just the contrary. The notion behind every student’s mind must be to score high and not be steady with their scores. GMAT mock tests incline more towards making the student adapt to the circumstances during the exam rather than the scores. It is always advised to not focus only on the scores therefore
Sectional groundwork: this is a very risky thing to do during the preparation and that is to go for partial preparations. The student will come across certain rules and advice stating to concentrate more on the weaker parts only and more, but the only way to score high is to make every single section your spotlight. What plays a magnanimous role here is the study plan which you’ve made till then, it has noted down all the signs of progress, the failing points and the topics which you’ve covered (in case you’ve missed out on any).
Stop being engrossed about a set of questions: you will discover innumerable questions while solving the GMAT mock test papers, and there will be few questions which will make the student feel bewildered because of their extremely easy solutions or the opposite. What generally strikes the student are those rocklike questions which are a handful in number but one just cannot get over those. They stick to one’s mind and they run over them for the solutions and assume those are the ones popping in their main exam. But this only costs them the time of opting for the probable ones.
Mock test numbers are just a part: There are students who acknowledge the results of the mock tests as altruistic. They put all their focus on it, and that’s something that should not be done. A good mock test result can happen because of certain reasons – positive mental health on that particular day, clarity of the question paper and more. The mock tests prepare the candidates for that day as a whole and not only for marks. The tests will only provide with a range and thus they are not accurate.
Concentrating on the last few days: It might happen that as the test date approaches, the candidate will feel dizzy thinking about it. The last few weeks before the test is for focusing and not even feeling overconfident. It is highly recommended to schedule the mock tests accordingly to ensure sync between the two. The leap from the mock tests to the final exam must be done patiently. The time that one has put on preparing the notes, thoroughly strengthening their weaknesses, establishing their strong points and more – all these will freeze if the candidate starts fretting or feeling over the top. Prep fatigue is a very jeopardizing phenomenon and enough rest must be tended.
Failing is okay: Majority of the students are groomed into accepting that failing in exam is a bad thing but it is not and the candidate should not tangle their minds in the same. It might happen that the exam didn’t favor the student and they end up scoring less or failing, fathoming the fact that it is just a stepping stone and another try is completely fine is necessary. Also, comparing oneself to the next student who might have scored plentiful is a very bad perception and must be avoided. Failure should always be considered as a privilege and worked on accordingly.
There are ample business schools obtaining students scoring 650+. So, if you are somebody not scoring a 700+, it is acceptable. One can always opt for a retake or go ahead with their marks but these few mistakes must be avoided to score high.
