What Students Say
Likes
- The University of Adelaide's Master of Computer Science programme has a solid academic reputation, and the material feels very current and research-focused, which is why I truly like studying there. There are many locations close by to study, dine, or unwind in between classes, and the university is conveniently located in the city. When tasks are too much, support services like writing and academic skills assistance are also quite helpful.
Dislikes
- Internships are hard to find, teaching quality varies, and admin can be slow.
Course Curriculum
- Academics and Curriculum
- Building on my Java backend and microservices experience, the Master of Computer Science programme covers fundamental subjects like distributed systems, event-driven computing, secure programming, machine learning, and big data. It maintains current knowledge through research-focused courses and combines theory with real-world electives.
- Exposure to industrial and Research There are few direct industrial internships in the coursework, but exposure is provided by electives like STEM 7555 STEM Internship and research projects (such COMP SCI 7099), which are more prevalent in PhD programmes.
- Class Schedule and Size
- On the North Terrace campus, there are usually two to three classes a day (lectures and tutorials lasting one to three hours each) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., for a weekly total of twelve to twenty-six hours including self-study. The typical class size is between 50 and 60 students, which promotes positive contact.
Admission Experience
- Because of the University of Adelaide's stellar reputation in software engineering and research, which perfectly complements my three-plus years of Java backend expertise at LTIMindtree in microservices, Spring Boot, Docker, and Kubernetes, I decided to pursue a Master of Computer Science there. Important elements included the program's downtown Adelaide campus, which facilitated convenient networking and work-life balance, as well as its flexible electives in DevOps and distributed systems. Admission was simple: submit an online application with your transcripts, resume, and SOP, and you'll receive an offer within a few weeks.
- All in all, it's been rewarding, connecting my industrial expertise with strong CS foundations. Despite the lack of internship visibility, I appreciate the relevant curriculum and helpful staff.
- My TOEFL score is 72/90, and the minimum requirements to apply are 60 in all topics, like reading, speaking, etc
Faculty
- Staff and Faculty
- Overall, the faculty-to-student ratio is about 1:22; smaller groups work well in postgraduate CS courses. The faculty is informed, engaged in research, and personable; emails and office hours receive prompt responses. Employees offer strong assistance with assignments and projects. Overall, the quality of instruction is high and pertinent to business demands.
Campus Life
- Campuses and Infrastructure
- Waite, Roseworthy, Melbourne, and the main North Terrace campus in central Adelaide (for computer science studies) are the four campuses of the University of Adelaide. Fitness hubs, research facilities, the largest library on campus, and state-of-the-art labs are examples of infrastructure.
- The Clubs, Events, and Extracurriculars
- In addition to more than 35 sports clubs (skiing, rowing, gym), there are more than 130 clubs covering culture, hobbies, politics, and course-specific topics like CS societies. Campus life is maintained by events like O'Week, Fringe performances at Scott Theatre, and YouX activities. Gyms, swimming pools, and group exercise are available in sports facilities.
Part Time Jobs
- Off-campus part-time work (cafes, retail, delivery via Seek/Indeed, Indian restaurants) pay $22–30 per hour, but on-campus jobs (cafes, libraries) are more competitive. During term, international students are limited to 48 hours per fortnight, with unlimited breaks. The Use CareerHub, YouX Job Shop, or drop CVs to apply; customise your resume and obtain WWCC if necessary. Rent is covered by earnings of between $400 to $800 per week. The TA/RA positions are competitive; perhaps 10–20% of CS students obtain them through department emails or performance; master's students are less likely to do so.
Placement
- With my background in Java backend, full-time IT positions such as software engineer or DevOps roles are abundant in Adelaide/SA following my Master of Computer Science.
- Within months, 88–89% of postgraduate IT graduates find full-time employment. beginning pay? CS positions here pay between 70 and 80k AUD.
- CareerHub events, LinkedIn/Seek portals, university employment fairs, and networking at tech meetings are some of the ways we get jobs. Even though they aren't usually encouraged, internships during school are beneficial. Overall, good results!
Accommodation
- I live in a shared apartment close to the North Terrace campus (Blair Athol area), which I located quickly and without the need for an agent using Facebook groups, StudyAdelaide Rental Database, and Gumtree. Rent for a room with three to four bedrooms is approximately AUD 800–1,200 per month, which includes WiFi, bills, and a furnished room, kitchen, and bathroom. The competitive Uni Village option is about AUD 1,400 all-in. Reasonably priced for students!
