  • The program in Project Management - Information Technology balances the theoretical and practical perspectives at Canadore College.
  • The curriculum is moderately challenging, catering to a wide range of students from different educational backgrounds. The structure is designed to be quite practical, with case studies, group projects, and practical assignments that are required in the industry.
  • Positive Highlights:
  1. The course provides practical knowledge, focusing on real-life application, making students industry-ready.

Admission Experience

  • I have applied only to one college, which is Canadore College, and also got a confirmed admission for it. I did not apply to any other colleges. There were no rejections at all. Hence, the question of stating the reason for rejection does not relate or apply to me. My focus was solely on Canadore since this fitted just well with my academic and career goals.
  • Canadore College was selected based on my career goals, as well as the fact that it provides an opportunity to be qualified for the RNIP program for PR. I got admitted despite having one band at 5.5, meeting their criteria. The admission process was pretty smooth through the OCAS portal. On the whole, it was a smooth experience and met my expectations without major challenges.
  • I have applied for the September 2024 intake, mainly influenced by the availability of the program and the time that best fit my career plans. The admission process was quite straightforward, and it took about a month from application to LOA. Applications were to be forwarded through the Ontario College Application Service portal, so quite streamlined.

Class Schedule

10

  • The class is scheduled 4-5 days a week, and on each day, classes go for 3-4 hours of lectures or lab sessions.
  • The timing usually goes from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
  • Classes are in small batches of approximately 20-30 students so that individual attention is guaranteed.
  • In this batch, 60-70% is taken up by Indian students.

Faculty

10

  • Canadore College enrolls students in an approximately 1:20 faculty-to-student ratio that facilitates proper attention to the students. It permits direct contact with the professor while upgrading the standard and relation in learning.
  • A judicious mixture of lecture sessions, interactive sessions, and projects provides the way for pedagogy. Faculty are orienting students through industrially relevant skills towards a bright employment avenue.
  • While the faculty does not explicitly assist students in finding jobs through personal networks, they provide guidance on job search strategies, resume preparation, and interviews. Sometimes, they share opportunities or references to help students.
  • The faculty members are experienced, approachable, and supportive. Many of them have professional backgrounds in project management and IT, adding much value to the learning process. A few faculty members stand out for their dedication and teaching style, although for individual students, preferences depend on the learning needs.

Accommodation

Off Campus
10

  • I chose off-campus accommodation near Canadore College. It was around 10-15 minutes from campus, by public transportation.
  • How I Found It:  -I found the accommodation through online platforms and student groups on Discord and Telegram, which are popular among international students. These groups provided useful leads and insights into available housing options.
  • Rent and Facilities:-It usually would go in the range of **CAD 500-700 per month**, but this depended on the type and shared arrangements. The basic utilities of heating, electricity, and water were usually included in the rent; not all, but some accommodations had free Wi-Fi.
  • Challenges:-The major problem was locating reasonably-priced, comfortable housing before arrival in Canada. Most landlords either ask for advance payments or references, which were not easy to furnish from abroad. During peak intake seasons, furthermore, housing becomes very competitive, hence requiring a student to plan well in advance.
  • Recommendations for Future Students:-Start looking for accommodation **2-3 months in advance of your arrival** to avoid last-minute hassle.
  • You also can look up rooms or apartments on the marketplace on Facebook, Kijiji, or specific Telegram groups for Indian students. Still, beware of scams, so verification of property and landlords has to be done in advance. Network with current students for actual referrals.
  • Indian Student Housing:-Most of the Indian students prefer staying in shared apartments or houses within the vicinity of the college either at Trout Lake Road or in Airport Road, well accessible to the campus through public transportation. The localities are reasonably affordable and very friendly towards the students.
