Wilfrid Laurier University, Masters in Applied Computing

Course Curriculum

8

  • The Master of Applied Computing course at WLU provided me with an equal balance between theories and hands-on learning in the form of labs and projects.
  • The course was a moderate and industry-related one. The classes were normally 25-35 students, and there were quite a number of international students. The variety of batch and practical methodology made learning interesting.

Admission Experience

  • I applied to the following universities:
    • Dalhousie University - Rejected [They rejected me in their interview as they had high expectations]
    • University of Victoria - Rejected [They didn't have enough staff/faculty for computer science]
    • Concordia University - Offered another program [The program I applied to got full as it was on a first-come, first-served basis]
    • Wilfrid Laurier University - Accepted
  • I chose Wilfrid Laurier University because it has its campus in Waterloo, which is considered as silicon valley of Canada, and I believe it would be beneficial to get an internship and job opportunities after graduation. In addition, Wilfrid Laurier University is a well-reputed and highly ranked university worldwide. Moreover, they have a strong academic environment.
  • I applied for the winter intake 2024 because I graduated with my bachelor's degree in September 2023 and didn't want to wait for a very long time. Otherwise, I would highly recommend the fall intake as it's the best intake because they offer a wide range of courses and programs in that intake, which may or may not be available in other intakes. [Don't have anything else to say]

Faculty

8

  • Students interacted well with faculty, and professors were supportive and approachable due to the faculty-to-student ratio.
  • Their instruction was through a combination of lectures, labwork, and real-world examples, which contributed towards the development of industry-ready skills. Faculty did not offer jobs directly, but tended to give tips and advice that proved useful in career preparation.

Campus Life

10

  • There are several campuses of WLU, and the primary ones are in Waterloo and Brantford. Services available in the Waterloo campus comprise the library, gym, sports courts, study areas, and health.
  • Clubs, cultural groups, and tech societies are numerous. Popular level events encompass O- Week, cultural fests, and student-level events. Extracurriculars can be sporting and physical, coding clubs, music, volunteering, and cultural associations.

Part Time Jobs

  • WLU offers TA, RA, DA roles and other on?campus jobs like food services, library, and athletics. TA/RA/DA positions are limited and competitive. On?campus jobs don’t count toward the 24?hour weekly limit, so students can work more hours. I got my on?campus job at the Terrace Food Court in Sept 2024 and have been working there since. Off?campus jobs follow the 24?hour rule and can be harder to secure.
  • The majority of the Indian students choose the food services to work in the food court, in the dining hall, in a cafe, and in local retail outlets. The salaries are typical and at the usual student rates. Part-time employment is competitive, particularly off-campus.
  • Students tend to post their openings in online platforms or on campus boards, and they send a resume and are short-interviewed. I did the same, and I was finally able to get my on-campus job.

Placement

8

  • The software development, data analytics, QA, and IT support are the primary positions following the MAC program on a full-time basis. Few students get employment opportunities in 6 months, and many of them, myself included, continue their job search after graduation.
  • The majority of the students use online job portals, LinkedIn, networking, and events such as the P4E Job Fair. Some of the batchmates were placed in the tech and consulting firms as developers or analysts, usually with personal contacts or internships.

Accommodation

Off Campus
10

  • I lived off?campus and found my accommodation through Facebook Marketplace, which offered affordable options. I chose not to stay in on?campus housing because it was more expensive than the options I was getting off-campus.
  • My place was about 800 meters from campus, so I could easily walk to classes every day, which was convenient and cost?effective.

Exams

  • Wilfrid Laurier University accepts the Canadian language test standards like IELTS, GMAT, and TOEFL. I personally took IELTS and got 7 bands. Moreover, they ask for a bachelor's degree (if applying to masters level program), SOP, LOR from at least 3 professors from undergrad institution.
  • There was no interview in the application process; they just gave admissions based on academic performance and a language proficiency test, such as IELTS.

Fees

  • They charge fees based on terms, not per course. Let's say if someone has taken 3 courses in a term, they will pay the same fees as someone who has taken only 1 course in the same term.
  • In addition to tuition fees, there are incidental fees which include amenities maintenance, gym membership, membership for using other facilities such as the swimming pool, board games, and health insurance.

Scholarship

  • For my specific program, there were no scholarships available at the time I applied. I looked into the various funding options offered by the university, but none of them applied to my program or eligibility criteria.
  • As a result, I had to rely on personal savings and other financial resources to support my studies.
