GCELT B.Tech Lateral FAQs

Ques. Is a diploma in Leather Technology mandatory for B.Tech Lateral Entry (Leather Technology) at GCELT?

Ans. No, it is not mandatory to have a diploma specifically in Leather Technology. Diploma holders in any Engineering/Technology discipline from an AICTE-approved institution are eligible. However, preference is given to diploma holders over B.Sc. graduates. Candidates with a Leather Technology diploma will have an advantage in terms of subject familiarity.

Ques. What is the career scope after B.Tech Lateral Entry (Leather Technology) from GCELT?

Ans. Graduates can work in leather processing units, tanneries, footwear companies, leather goods manufacturers, and quality control labs. India is one of the world's largest leather producers, and GCELT graduates are highly sought after in the industry. Kolkata's leather cluster (Tangra, Topsia) and other major leather hubs like Chennai, Kanpur, and Agra offer excellent employment opportunities.

Ques. How many seats are available for B.Tech Lateral Entry (Leather Technology) at GCELT?

Ans. Lateral entry seats are typically 10-15% of the sanctioned intake of the regular B.Tech programme. For Leather Technology (30 seats regular intake), approximately 3-5 lateral entry seats are available. As seen in the 2025-26 decentralised counselling, vacant seats were available even after JELET e-counselling, indicating relatively lower competition for this stream.

Ques. Can B.Sc. graduates apply for B.Tech Lateral Entry (Leather Technology) at GCELT?

Ans. Yes, B.Sc. graduates from UGC-recognised institutions with Mathematics as a subject and at least 45% aggregate marks are eligible. However, first preference is given to diploma holders in Engineering/Technology from AICTE-approved institutions. B.Sc. graduates are considered only if seats remain after diploma holders are accommodated.

Ques. What is the difference between B.Tech Leather Technology (regular) and B.Tech Lateral Entry (Leather Technology) at GCELT?

Ans. The regular B.Tech Leather Technology is a 4-year programme starting from 1st year, with admission through WBJEE. The Lateral Entry programme is a 3-year programme starting from 2nd year, with admission through JELET. Both lead to the same B.Tech degree from MAKAUT. The lateral entry route is designed for diploma holders who already have foundational technical knowledge.

Ques. Is there any scope for higher studies after B.Tech Lateral Entry (Leather Technology) from GCELT?

Ans. Yes, graduates can pursue M.Tech in Leather Technology or related disciplines through GATE. GCELT itself offers M.Tech in Leather Technology. Other options include MBA, M.Sc. in relevant fields, or research programmes. GATE-qualified graduates can also apply for PSU jobs in industries related to chemicals, materials, and manufacturing.
