- Mijbil the Otter, by Gavin Maxwell, is a story that describes the beautiful relationship between the author and the bond he shares with his pet.
- The story begins with Gavin Maxwell, the author, travelling to the Consulate-General with a friend to respond to their mail from Europe.
- On their way, the author expressed his desire to own an otter instead of a dog because he felt abandoned after losing his pet dog to death earlier.
- His friend recommended him to Tigris Marshes, Iraq, where he could bring himself an Otter.
- After receiving the mail, he took the sack two Arabs brought with a message inside from his friend. Upon opening it, he was surprised to find an Otter.
- He named the Otter “Mijbil” and would often call him “Mij” in short.
- Mijbil took his time to adapt to a new environment. Meanwhile, Maxwell noticed that Mij was amused by the water and gradually learned to open the bathroom faucet on its own.
