Honestly, it's not great. The teaching quality isn't impressive. Students who just memorize can still get high grades (like me with a 9 CGPA). The events and activities are outdated and dull. It's just four years that feel like a waste. Plus, the job placements are really disappointing.
CONS... As someone studying at NIT Hamirpur, surviving here has become really tough lately. It's at its lowest point now, with no freedom or room for personal growth. Curfews are strict, with everyone needing to be back by 9:30 pm, regardless of gender. Girls can only leave campus on Saturdays for three hours, while boys are allowed out any weekday but must return by 8 pm. So much for equality.
There are no festivals, educational events, or anything informative going on. Students are mainly pushed to focus on studies, with hardly any chance to go anywhere except home. To leave for home, you need to fill out a pass requiring three signatures from different places. Wi-Fi is non-functional, wasting money, and there's no washing machine available for boys.
Girls have to go to the night library accompanied by a security guard like little kids, and both boys and girls attend club activities in lines. Clubs don't hold much importance; they mostly have you make charts or posters. Girls get fined 50 rupees or more for leaving fans or lights on, keeping mess plates in their rooms, or not filling entries for every move they make, like going to class or the ground.
Fines are also imposed for missing attendance deadlines, where you have to visit the hostel warden's office to say your roll number to confirm you’re back and not in the boys’ hostel at night. The only upside is a decent placement if your grades are good, even if your skills aren't enough for off-campus jobs.
I think I'm the right person to answer this! I'm going to be straightforward, no sugar-coating here.
NIT Hamirpur offers a variety of courses across several departments like:
When it comes to placements, students do get placed, but it's not easy at all. It requires a lot of hard work, and some students leave without a job offer. Some go on to pursue higher studies, while others struggle to get hired despite their efforts. You can check the latest placement report, but keep in mind that the numbers can be a bit exaggerated, though mostly accurate. An interesting point is that CSE Dual Degree placements start in the final year, and some students are already getting great offers even before the official placement season kicks off. For example, about 10 out of 26 students from the 2026 CSE Dual batch are placed with an average salary of around 20 LPA. CSE Dual has the best placement opportunities overall.
That's all I have to say about placements for now. I could write a separate post to dive deeper into this topic, but feel free to ask questions in the comments.
Campus life is amazing. The campus is beautiful, and a walk around can really lift your spirits. There's a Student Activity Center for sports, and many active clubs and societies. There's also a health center and an ambulance service. Throughout the year, there are various events like Hillfair, the cultural fest, which is a big deal here, along with sports, technical, and business events. College life is fantastic. NIMBUS, the tech fest, isn't as grand as those in top colleges across India but is improving every year.
As for the hostels, they aren't the best part. Girls have strict curfew timings until the final year, with the first year having to be in by 6:30 PM and others by 9:30 PM. It seems unfair, right? But that's the administration's decision. I think the curfew should be extended to 11:30 PM for first-year students and at least 2 AM for others. Boys have the same timings, but they aren't as strictly enforced except in the first year. There are serious water issues in Himgiri and Himadri Hostels, and although other hostels have similar problems, it's worse in these two. Hostels do have indoor sports facilities.
The campus now has new Wi-Fi installed everywhere, with decent speed and no usage limit, but it can be unreliable at times. The mess food is average.
You'll find a temple, laundry services, cafés, and shops on campus, so you can pretty much get everything you need. Classrooms are well-maintained, and the library offers high-speed internet in the reading area.

However, just being in a top branch doesn't guarantee placements. It helps, but you've got to put in the effort.
