Course Curriculum Overview
The Course curriculum is designed taking in consideration to the companies which come for hiring during placements. From an academic point of view, the course is pretty dynamic you learn basics of all the three pillars of Mechatronics and get a deep insight into robotics, AI, ML, Machine vision, etc. based on your choice of specialization. From Placement point of view, Specifically for my branch(Mechatronics), the course is not appreciated by many companies as we have subjects from Mechanical, EEE and Computer Science but they argue that we do not have a particular area of expertise. The course is pretty vague and there are not many companies in the market ready for mechatronics engineers. But the market is slowly changing and the demand for engineers with expertise in robotics and data analytics is rising and is a positive sign.
Internships Opportunities
Yes, it does provide internships but are limited and have to taken up in the final year. The stipend depends upon the companies which we choose but it ranges from 15-20k. The internship offers are managed by the placement department and their are opportunities for converting them to PPOs.
Placement Experience
Placement opportunities vary from branch to branch. The placements in the core branches are amazing but the ones in the newly formed branches are still on the verge to take off. Mechatronics has few but good job opportunities. Companies like Bosch, Daimler, Ford, Fiat, Hero, etc come during the placement rounds.
College Events
There are dozens of events organised by many clubs in manipal. These are social, cultural, talks, training, etc. But there are two main events around the year. First is Technical Fest called TechTatva- Students get to participate in different competitions from robot wars, hackathons, coding, gaming etc. Students volunteer and organised these events through help from college. Second is Cultural fest called Revels- There are dozens of cultural events like talent show, bands, dance, singing, treasure hunt, stand up comedy, DJ concert etc.
Fee Structure And Facilities
It is expensive. The fee structure increases for every batch. For my batch the fee structure was 12.85L for 4 years and the installments are mentioned during the admissions. This is the academic fee and does not include hostel fee.
Fees and Financial Aid
The college provides scholarships to students based on their rank in the MUOET and some of them to the localites. These are limited and are not disclosed by them. The loan facility is available with many banks and can be accessed and processed easily.
Campus Life
The labs are made in collaboration with the leaders in the industry and they are state of the art. The equipment is maintained regularly. The sports facilities are very good and inter college tournaments are held around the year.
Hostel Facilities
The hostels are overall good if you get the good ones. There 2-3 hostels which were constructed years back and are in a good condition. The new ones are extremely good and are equipped with good facilities. The mess is near the hostel and the food is hygienic.
Alumni/Alumna
The alumni network of manipal is quite strong and the seniors are easily approachable through Linkedin. Whenever you sit for an interview with a company, you can contact the senior who got hired in the same company and ask for tips and advise.
Exam Structure
The exam structure for every subject is divided into 50% internal and 50% external. The internal exams are divided into 4 assignments (5 marks each) and 2 sessionals (15 marks each). The external exam is the final paper of 50 marks at the end of the semester.
Admission
I got to know about the admission process from the ads on the internet. I registered for the MUOET exam, which is an online test for entrance in Manipal Institute of Technology. The rank which you score from the test is used as the basis for allotment of branches/streams. The tests are conducted in many online test centers across major cities in India and the score of the test is instantly displayed after the test. Usually colleges don't provide the facility to take multiple tests but MIT gives multiple attempts. We have seen people complain that they knew the answers but they got nervous or they didn't plan their time properly. The solution for that is allowing candidates to give multiple attempts. I gave the test two times and improved my score. The test fee was less than 1.5k. After the tests are over, Rounds of admission start and MIT then invites students to the campus to select their branches according to their ranks and vacancies. This is the first round and students get a chance to look around the campus, hostel and interact with the faculty members. After this round the other two rounds are basically filling the preference of other branches in case you didn't get the one you wanted through the online portal. I selected aeronautical engineering in the first round and got bumped to mechatronics in the next round as it was my first preference.
Faculty
Our college has the highest ratio of student to faculty across India and the faculty is very good and encouraging overall. They encourage us to choose research topics and write a review papers around the years and stay up to date with the technological advancements in our fields. They are easily approachable by all students through their emails, phone numbers and face to face meeting in their chambers. They are knowledgeable in their fields and most of them also have on-hands experience in MNCs. There always are 2-3 teachers in every branch who are not up to the standards but they get totally dislodged by the other 80-90% of the faculty.
