Overall review of NIT Jamshedpur

The best thing about NIT Jamshedpur is its chilled life. Students are given much freedom. Also they don't have to worry about grades. There is hardly anyone who fails. However infrastructure needs to be improved as it has adverse effect on our NIRF ranking.

The curriculum is quite similar to any other NIT but the Professors are friendly and it is relatively easier to score good grades here.Moreover there is very less academic pressure and students get enough time to explore themselves. There are two exams in a semester- mid Sem (30 marks) and end sem (50 marks) rest 20 marks is for assignment and quiz.In general life is very chilled over here. As far as research is concerned, it depends on students.Professors always motivate us to go for research and help the students in getting paper published.

NIT Jamshedpur stands among one of the best NIT in terms of placements.Companies that visited our campus in recent years include Microsoft, Amazon, Goldman Sachs, GE, Samsung R&D, Qualcomm, L&T, Aditya Birla Hindalco, Vedanta, Tata Group- Tata Steel, Tata Power, Tata Motors, Tata Hitachi, Tata Tinplate, JUSCO, Tata Bluescope, Tata Metaliks; Last year the total % of students placed was 90% and the average CTC was 7.5 LPA Our institute also provides for internship opportunities for pre final year students.The stipend varies from company to company.Software companies like Microsoft, Amazon has a stipend of 45k approx, Adobe has a stipend of 1 lakh, Goldman Sachs has stipend of 75k However core companies like Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Alstom give 10k as stipend and JSL gives 20k as stipend

There are three major fests in our institute: Sports Meet Culfest (Cultural) Ojass (techno management) Apart from this there are various branch fests like- Technica ( metallurgy) Cognitio (Mechanical) Pravardhan (Electrical)

The fee structure is similar for all NITs. For our batch the figures were as follows: Institute fee- ?62,500 (if you are SC/ ST or your family income is below 1 lakh you won't have to pay this fees ) Other fees (like Hostel, LAN, transport, maintainence, etc)- ?20,500 Mess Advance- ?16,000 All the figures are for one semester.

Our institute has an SBI branch inside the campus and loan facility is available for all the students taking admission in our institute at a very nominal rate of interest.In my case it was 9%. There are various scholarships available but only for students from economically weaker sections.Some are provided by govt like e-Kalyan and many are provided by organizations like Tata Cummins, etc.

There are various sports as well as cultural teams in our institute. Sports include cricket, football, hockey, basketball, volleyball, badminton, chess, table tennis and athletics of course.Every year we have an annual sports meet in which all the branches compete against each other. In cultural we have a Cultural and Dramatics Society and there are also other societies like Literary and Debating Society, QuNITe, Phocus, etc. Apart from all this there are clubs including Aeromodelling, Electric Solar Vehicle, etc In a class of 560 students there are around 50-60 girls.

Hostel is compulsory as of now.However the rules might change in near future. All the hostels have LAN facilities however the speed is an issue in some hostels.All the hostels are equipped with Televisions, some indoor games.You also get news papers and magazines everyday.From 2nd year you will enjoy single occupancy rooms.

Seniors are the only guide in any college.Be it academics or placements, seniors prove themselves to be extremely helpful.There is an I&AR team responsible for maintaining Alumni relations and we also have an alumni meet every year in our institute.Some of our Alumni are heads of various organizations like Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. Interaction with seniors take place mostly through branch societies and various technical and non technical teams.

Admission to the BTech course is through an all India level entrance exam- JEE Mains.It is a 3 hour test consisting of 90 objective type questions from three subjects- Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.In order to secure a seat in NIT Jamshedpur you must get a rank <30k in JEE Mains for UR category.

Some of the old faculties are really good.They are friendly as well.They encourage us to go for research and also their level of teaching is excellent.They do not give unnecessary burden of assignments, etc. However most of the new facilities are quite strict with assignments as well as attendance.Although they are equally good at teaching. Most of the faculties are a PhD.
