Course Curriculum Overview
The college is affiliated to Calcutta University. The curriculum is quite theory-based which comes as a surprise because the course itself is practical-based. So, the course is not quite as good as it should be. The examination system has become semester-wise last year but our batch is continuing with the earlier system of three examinations a year being Mid term, Selections and Final University exam. The everyday schedule was not hectic at all. In fact, it was quite the opposite, and not in a good way.
Placement Experience
There is a placement cell in our college which provides internships and jobs opportunities to the 2nd and 3rd year students. However, the process is quite blurred and there is no placement opportunity for the course of Journalism and Mass Communication. The companies which come for conducting placements focus more on the B. com and BBA students. I sat for interview for Wipro which was providing a part-time (night shift) job for Voice processing executive but the job description had no information regarding the probable stipend/salary.
College Events
The college conducts various inter-departmemt and inter-college competitions of sports and other cultural events. There is no technical fest. A yearly fest is organized called the Srijan. The college deems it to be one of the biggest fests of the city.
Fee Structure And Facilities
The fees needs to be paid for the entire year in a single installment. The fee differs every year based on the curriculum. The fee proves to be expensive as one does not get value for the money being payed. The fees needs to be payed via a Demand Draft. No online payment is available.
Fees and Financial Aid
None. The college does not provide for any scholarship or loan facility whatsoever. The fee payment process is also not friendly and needs to b payed in one installment on a specified date. The fee needs to be payed via a Demand Draft.
Campus Life
It is a girl's College. Extra curricular activities include sports, bengali drama club, student council, social welfare committee, NSS, etc. There are various labs for computer, geography, science and Journalism. There is a common room with a few playing equipment.
Hostel Facilities
No hostel facility available in or nearby the college. The students coming from outside the city stay in PG's or rent flats according to their convenience. I live in the city but have friends staying in PG's in the nearby areas of the college.
Alumni/Alumna
There is no alumni. Interaction with seniors is minimal as there are very few events which call for interaction. Experience has been average and was mostly related to academics. The only place for interaction was at the time of Fresher's, farewell or seminar.
Admission
I wanted to experience a course which would provide me with more practical knowledge than theory. Journalism and Mass communication seemed to be one such course. I applied to 4 colleges in Kolkata which provided this course and got into 3 of them. I chose Shri Shikshayatan College as it was well reputed in the city(not for all the courses). The admission process involved submitting a form with the 10th and 12th marksheet. The process is completely based on merit list.
Faculty
The faculty of my course includes 3 teachers. The teachers are qualified and experienced in the field of journalism but they fail to enrich the students with their knowledge of the same. One of the teachers doesn't bother to take regular classes and complete her part of the course which puts the students in a lot of trouble. The other two teachers teach well but since the curriculum itself is too theoritical in nature, the teachers are bound to be restricted to provide bookish education.
