Remarks
My rank in JEE MAINS was around 14k so, difficult to get top branches in top NITs. I preferred top college with not so popular branch i.e. biotechnology. Also, this college is located in my home state i.e. UP. Good Aspects: 1. Good hostel infrastructure (for 1st year only as its a new hostel rest all are old) 2. Labs for evergreen branches like Mechanical, Electrical etc are good. Computer Sci. has a separate building altogether. 3. Excellent placement record 4. Broad and supportive alumni base Bad Aspects: 1. Limited Senior-Junior interaction 2. Everything is decided on the basis of a pointer like a hostel allotment, open elective allotment etc. 3. Girls were not allowed on campus after 8 pm 4. Girls could not wear shorts. 5. Most faculties had boring teaching styles
Course Curriculum Overview
I had mathematics and biology in my class 12 so, I took biotechnology as I had the idea of it as an emerging branch but sadly missed out on placement part for which I later paid a price. First-year: common courses like physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering drawing etc for all students Second-year: core subjects like biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, biophysics Third-year: advanced core subjects like molecular biology, genetic eng., immunology etc. Final year: hardly 4-5 subjects because everyone is busy in placements In biotechnology, faculty: student ratio is quite good like around 1:3. But not so good in other branches. Most of the faculties have done BSc and MSc so the way of teaching is still notes and theoretical and less technological. Few faculties were very good and had excellent teaching methods. In a semester, there would be one minor of 20 marks, one major of 60 marks and 20 marks for internal assessment. Students could pass easily but to score high little more mugging.
Internships Opportunities
Mostly IT sector companies like Amazon, Flipkart, LinkedIn and few core companies like Bajaj, TATA, Mahindra offer internships with a stipend. Projects done during internships become very important for placements as questions are asked in interviews. Many students get unpaid internships through alumni contacts.
Placement Experience
CS and IT students get internships right after 3rd year and 40% of them get PPOs. In placements which start from July end, big tech and consulting companies come on the first day like Goldman Sachs, Amazon, Flipkart, Directi, Samsung, Adobe etc. Rest all companies keep on coming the whole year. Almost everyone gets placed. Highest package: around 30 LPA for tech companies like Directi, Amazon etc. The student from any branch who has coding skills can get the offer. Lowest package: 4-5 LPA for students from biotech, civil, mechanical etc Many students go for job and after a few years of job they go for MBA, MTech, or govt exam preparation.
Fees and Financial Aid
2013-17 batch had fees of around 35k per semester which was increased to 50k per semester from 2014-18 batch onwards. Scholarship: I had a state govt scholarship from UP. College provided a scholarship for top 3 meritorious students of every branch every year with meagre 3k. Apart from these few scholarships like O P Jindal scholarships were also provided. Financial assistance was provided to SC/ST students and economically weaker sections. Campus jobs: Hardly any companies for biotech students. They have to go for IT or consulting jobs with packages not more than 6-7 LPA. Rest all branches except Civil Eng. have good placements in core sectors.
Campus Life
Campus life is not so good as Allahabad is a tier 2 city and college infrastructure still looks like that of the 80s except the director building and 1st-year hostel. Restriction on girls after 8 pm on the campus makes it worst. Every batch hears about a ghosted place where the swimming pool used to exist unless a professor's daughter died in that pool. Sports are like to play at your own risk. Lawn tennis courts are the hard ones with cheap quality cement which wash away in every monsoon season. Same is there with basketball courts. Skating court is where students play mini football. Cricket is played everywhere. Culrav is the annual fest held in March end. Quality of the fest will solely depend on the amount sanctioned for the fest in that particular year and the student committee which is heading it. Avishkar is the annual tech fest where several new ideas are presented but hardly any idea is converted into reality. Funding is always an issue. Prizes are given by crowdfunding from alumni.
Hostel Facilities
First Year: Awesome hostel facility. One actually get a separate study room. 3 boys in one room. Separate cupboards, separate study table, lamps etc. No LAN connection and Wifi strength are poor. Food quality is pathetic except breakfasts. Second Year: Either 4 boys in one room or two boys in one room so congested. Food quality improves. Hardly there is space to keep study tables. Third Year: 2 boys in one room. Food quality is OK. Final Year( not 4th year as its a tradition): Single room with bed, cupboard, table and chair. Hostels are allotted on the basis of pointers. High pointers good quality hostels.
Interview Experience
Admission into B.Tech programme at MNNIT Allahabad is through JEE MAINS which is a highly competitive exam. Common counselling is conducted for NITs and IITs. Earlier class 12th board marks were also added in ranks but now they have been excluded. Final merit is solely on the basis of JEE MAINS exam.
Other Applied Colleges
IIT Delhi | MS Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology
I have spent lesser time in IIT Delhi than NIT Allahabad and still studying.
