Remarks
I chose SMIT because it falls under Manipal University, making it one of the best options for a UG course in North and NE India. The second major reason for me to make this choice was that the location of the campus is on a hillstation, and it has got one of the most beautiful sceneries to offer. I can't stress the fact enough, how beautiful the landscape of the region is, filled with hills, rivers, valleys and immense greenery. This gives one a sense of freshness and an ability to focus on studies which is not very much possible in an urban region. The next reason is that the faculty (CA dept. ) is really good. All the professors hold a PhD degree, at the very least, and they've got good communication skills and can communicate the ideas easily to the students in simple language. Apart from this, they actually care about the students and would go an extra step to make the student overcome his difficulties, if he's facing any. Another reason to make this choice was that the college has got a really good infrastructure and is equipped with latest technologies in classes and laboratories. Apart from these there were many small reasons like proximity to hometown, curriculum, etc that made me go for SMIT.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course curriculum is up to date with the latest trends. There are regular workshops to enable students to follow the latest trends in the world. The workshops are mostly free of cost or are sponsored by the department, and are held by reputable organizations like IITs, Microsoft, etc. The faculty is extremely qualified and has got good teaching and communication skills. The HOD of my dept. (CA), Dr. Ratika Pradhan, has often gone extra steps to help the students overcome any difficulties they're facing. She has time and again proved herself to be a mentor, a friend and most importantly a guardian who genuinely cares for her students.
Placement Experience
The college attracts several tier 1 companies like Microsoft and Amazon. Apart from these there are more than 100 companies coming to the campus for placement drives. The average package offered for btech is 700000-800000.
College Events
The campus life is really good. There are students from all over the country and some even from Nepal, and are mostly intellectuals. The college hosts the biggest Festival in NE India named Kalrav that attracts students from several unis and colleges in the region. It's a 3 day fest that hosts several celebrities and events and has a big budget. The college also hosts a TEDx event around September, every year. Apart from these, there are several tech fests throughout the year that provide exposure to students and a relief from academics.
Campus Life
The campus has got the best infrastructure in the whole state. There are multiple basketball courts, football fileds, badminton courts, a hitech gymnasium, a sauna, a swimming pool, etc. The whole campus is Wi-Fi enabled offering speeds close to 2MBps. The library is huge with loads of books, there's also a reading room. The labs and classes are equipped with advanced systems and equipments. Moreover, the college also boasts a supercomputer- Chetak, for the students.
Hostel Facilities
The hostel has got good infrastructure providing 24x7 electricity and hot water. The hostels are wifi enabled offering a speed of close to 2MBps on average and as high as 5-6MBps early morning when traffic is low. The room is shared between two students and each student gets a bed, cupboard and a study tabel, along with an attached bathroom with each room. The rooms are well built and properly ventilated, and the bathroom is modern. The hostel buildings have got lifts, multipoint exits and a fire extinguishing system embedded in the infrastructure. The qualiy of the mess food is very good, offering cuisines from all over the country along with non-veg options 3 times a week.
