Anonymous's Review On Gossner College, Ranchi

The College is very reputed for its academic values. It has some of the best teachers of the city. I opted for Zoology because I have interest in the course. I also had thought of preparing for medical entrance exams. The institutes for medical and engineering coaching is at a walking distance from the college.

The Ranchi University had started semester system in the same year I took admission. Faculties joked about us being the "experimental batch". Our syllabus was new to the teachers as well. One of my teachers told that we had certain papers that she had studied in her Masters. Though we had certain papers that required us to go to specific sites in all the 3 years to give us industrial exposure, we were only given the opportunity in the 1st year. The Zoology faculty is good. The former HOD Professor VK Mishra is one of the best teachers that I ever had.

I am enrolled in Internshala and was selected for the position for content writer in Desi Art Room with total stipened of Rs 3000 for 1 month. I, however could not complete the internship due to health complexities.

I have a relative who graduated in the year 2017 from this college. He was a BCom graduate and was placed in Kolkata with a salary of about Rs 1,80,000. The company visited the college and selected him through proper procedure. As for my department, there are no relevant companies that visit the college. They are mainly for data entries or call centres and such. There is no alumni network for job referrals in my department. With the current pandemic, I do not have any hope of companies visiting the college.

The College holds Youth Festival every year and last year (2019), it hosted the inter-college Youth Festival. The students are all allowed to participate in their choice of activities. There is a diverse list of activities including debates, prose, painting, dancing, singing and many more. I have never heard or seen any Technical Festivals in the college. I had a friend (pursuing Btech from another college) who once came to talk about organising a tech shop in my college but sadly had no luck and the HODs did not consider him seriously.

The college took sports money for every year but we are not given the information about the sports facilities. Though there are students practicing football and basketball sometimes, majority of us have no idea how to enroll in the team or where to find the person responsible. The wi-fi is only for the college. Students are not allowed to use it. I am very disappointed with the library for many reasons. It is very small that allows only around 40 chairs. We are not allowed to choose the books. If one wants a book, they have to ask the librarian behind the desk. The librarian's desk divides the seating space and the selves where the books are kept. So yes we can not browse through the selves to get the books. Worst for atleast me is that there is not one single novel in the library. I once asked the librarian for a novel and judging by her reaction, I can say that it was the 1st time anyone had ever asked for a novel. But most of the times we get books for our academics. There are no new editions though. My department has all the required equipments in the laboratory. I have Chemistry as my generic so I can safely say that Chemistry department too have the required equipments for our experiments.

The college does not provide Hostel facilities. However there are loads of rentals, lodges and PGs near the college. The average rate including mess charges is around Rs 4000-7000. It is very easy to avail such PGs as many of them advertise their facilities in the college itself.
