Anonymous's Review On Vivekananda College, Kolkata

The main reason I got admitted here is because the college is at a walking distance from my home with fair reputation. And since I couldn't get admission in any high end colleges I chose it so as to invest maximum time in my studies and not to waste time on daily travels.

Few professors are good. In my 2nd and 3rd year I had no problems with lab work due to our professor's guidance. But department surely needs improvement in terms of teacher-student bond. Professors seem a little detached and unapproachable sometimes. Course curriculum is a bit bizzare in terms that we sometimes had to do lab work even before knowing the theory. Seminars are held often which are very enjoyable. Last year there was even an astrophysics seminar competition called Uniexplore.Had a good time there.

There maybe placements but I am as a student never informed or never saw any placements processes going on. I don't know of any such cells or companies coming. Though placement is mentioned in the brochure of college but I suspect that the placement cell is hardle activly. However in my first year we gave a general knowledge and logical reasoning kind of exam where we were told that this will lead to some kind of job opportunity.

Campus Life for us is the 5-6 hours we spend in college. But we do have grand fresher's welcome. And then festivals like saraswati Puja are also held here. Though I didn't attend the college also arranges fest where they invite local celebrities. College is very generous about serving students with free delicious food on various occasions.

Campus infrastructure is mediocre. Not a very big campus. Yearly sports events are held. NCC is active in college. They have gym and table tennis. Canteen is also there with good quality food at a modrate price. The college also have a stationary store inside the science building where u can go for photocopy and buying stationaries. A highlight of our college is the fully ac auditorium where various seminars are held and professors from prestigious colleges and inatitues are invited . The college has an attached big field with it where students play differwnt sports. The college also has a central library and depratment libraries. The central library caters all necessary books which can be also taken home. The college also gives the internet usage facility on computers for students . The college has a common room for girls and boys where you can relax in between lectures. However girl's bathrooms in ground floor of the bulding is just horrible . We used to go to floors above for using toilet. All science labs are very well equipped.
