Experience of college life

Visva-Bharati University is a central university which was established by Rabindranath Tagore. The university is located in the Birbhun district of West Bengal. Amazing faculty of the university is the main reason for my preference. Moreover, this is the only central university of Bengal. The admission process takes place during the month of June. The form filling process generally starts from the month of May. For taking admission in graduation level, there is no entrance tests and is entirely based on the marks obtained bu students at the 10+2 level except for the departments of art(Kala Bhavana and Shilpa Sadana) and music (Samgeet Bhavana). Only these two departments take an admission test for pursuing graduation. The University takes an entrance test for each department for pursuing a masters degree. One can also pursue any certificate course along with any regular course such as French, Russian, Italian, Japanese, Hindi, Dance, Music and many more.

I have chosen this course because right from my school life I wanted to pursue honours in English and due to the amazing faculty members I have opted for this university. I have come to know about the faculty members from one of my family friends. In the English department, each class contains almost 34-38 students and the department contains 20 professors. 3-4 professors have foreign degrees and rest are from the most reputed educational institutions of India. Per class consist of 1 hour and the topics are revised repeatedly. If any problem arises while personal reading of the text, the professors are always there to solve it. The university abides by the semester system which has a span of 6months. For the English department, you will easily get 60 percent if you work hardly and follow the regular classes.

See, the university is not a commercial one. You can pursue honours, Masters, PhD and certificate courses in the university. There is no such campus placement system but the university has an employment cell which is mainly for those who pursue honours in foreign languages such as French, Italian, Russian, Chinese, Japanese and many others.

In 2017, when I took admission the fee structure of a year could not cross 3000-4000 a year. But with the recent fee hike policy, it is up to 7000 per year and the admission form costs Rs 1000 for general candidate and 300 for sc candidates. Only the top 3 students of a year get a scholarship of 1000 rupees.

Trust me, life on campus is amazing. Once you go there, you will not return from there. The social environment is so nice and calm. One leads a healthy and peaceful life there. There is no such annual fest in the university. But programmes like freshers, farewell and various university programmes anandamela, Dol, Poushmela, Christostav, etc takes place. Almost every month, there is some programme. There is a central library and also there are separate libraries for each department. The Central Library contains a reading room, journal section, stacks. There are ample opportunities for sports enthusiasts. Each year the university makes a team for competing at National level in various sports. It also has separate Bhavan for sports named Vinaya Bhavana which includes departments like Yoga, Physics education, etc.

The hostel room contains a chair, a table, a study lamp, a tube light, a fan, an almirah, a bed for a student. Generally in a room, 3 Students live together but a student can also apply for a single room which costs 3000 per month. Room with 3 boarders charges 500rupees per student and is absolutely free for sc, st students. The meal quality is not very good.
