Remarks
1. Xavier has an unparalleled legacy pan India. Works as a perfect brand name. 2. Being a north-Indian, this meant an opportunity for me to expand my network and connections to the south and west of India as well. 3. Ranked in top 3 colleges for Media 4. The admission took into account both the marks of grade 12 and entrance test (which was easy as compared to other colleges) and the procedure is detailed on the official website. 5. For the general category, there were only 13 seats which made it really competitive. 6. The college focuses on your holistic development- pushes you to be empathic towards society and engage in social work, be a critical consumer, question everything around you, do extracurricular - all apart from academics. Attendance is compulsory too. So, in general, there’s an environment of sincerity. 7. Having diverse alumni working in almost all industries, exposure is excellent. College fests, workshops, guest lectures are a highlight.
Course Curriculum Overview
I wanted to get into journalism which is why this was a safe bet. However, while attending the course, I feel everyone’s intellectual capacity has been challenged and upgraded. so we’re now encouraged to look at different fields like Marketing, Management, Research, Academia, etc. apart from classic media options. The faculty student ratio is pretty nice- 1:65 Due to the special nature of the course, the department of BMM is like a close knit family. The course has a liberal arts orientation with moderate emphasis on practical skills like photography, designing etc. The teaching method pushes you to become an independent learner and break free of the conventional way of learning that has been going on in schools (of spoon feeding). The exams are conducted timely, efficiently and are easy. Only students who haven’t studied economics in the past (in school) might face some issues but that said, it’s a smooth experience.
Placement Experience
I haven’t explored this aspect as of yet because I plan on higher education instead of getting placed somewhere. However, reputed companies like media houses, ad agencies, banks, etc. do come to the campus and from what I’ve heard from my seniors, the experience is pleasant.
Fees and Financial Aid
The course is highly subsidized and most students find no issue in paying these fees. There are scholarships, especially for international students. I don't think there are many on-campus jobs for first-year or second-year students but thereafter they do have limited opportunities. The college does put you in contact with organizations or companies that offer internships and opportunities.
Campus Life
Xavier’s annual fest Malhar is Asia’s largest student run-fest. It is extremely hyped. It happens in mid-August. Apart from Malhar, we host almost 30+ small fests that are department-specific. The college is bustling with activity throughout the year. Xaviers has two libraries which are extremely exotic. Book lovers love it. They have exclusive historical archives too. The library is one of the most important parts of the campus. I don’t know much about sports but extracurricular activities are compulsory for students. They have to complete a stipulated number of points per year. Throughout the year there are fests, workshops, lectures, volunteer opportunities, and what not! There’s a club for almost all activities- debate, drama, magazine (three languages), social work, environment, inter-religious studies, theory, commerce, film appreciation, etc.
