The location of IISER-Kolkata is very remote which creates difficulties in direct integration of facilities with IACS, Jadavpur University etc. I would rate it as a good college overall and it teaches you not just the coursework but also how to be a good

Entrance Preview

IIT-JEEAIR: 6998, I always wanted to be a scientist. I had not heard of IISERs before. The counselor at IIT-Guwahati suggested me that since I am very sure of choosing a career in research, I should go for IISERs. My counselling for IISERs was scheduled in IISER Kolkata. There I met Prof. Swapan K Datta. His speech convinced me that this is the institute I want to join.

Course Curriculum Overview

4.5

The course curriculum has been well researched and is at par with the curriculum followed by top international universities. The focus is not just on textbook learning, it compels the students to think critically about the topic at hand. There are term-papers, group projects etc. The theory classes are run in very good sync with the lab classes.

Internships Opportunities

Yes, There is a very established culture of students going for summer internships. A student can choose to work as an intern at the labs in the college itself or he/she can go outside the college. Students from IISER-K go for internships in all leading institutes of international repute including but not limited to MIT, Caltech, Harvard, AMOLF, VU Amsterdam etc. For foreign travels institute offers travel allowance of up to 1 lac to selected students. All students get INSPIRE/KVPY fellowship of 5000 INR/p. m.

In general, most of the alumni have chosen to go for a PhD. They have been placed at top institutes like Cambridge, Oxford, MIT, Princeton, UCDavis, Caltech, University of Amsterdam etc. Some of the students choose to go for an MBA and they have made to IIM-C, IIM-B, IIM-I, XLRI etc. A handful also choose to go for UPSC examinations and we have an IAS officer from the 08MS batch of IISER-K.

We also participate in Inter-IISER Sports Meet (IISM). There are open-days for high school students at our college. Major festivals like Onam, Saraswati Puja etc are also celebrated with great enthusiasm. The literary and drama clubs are very active and keep the campus buzzing with activities round the year.

Fee Structure And Facilities

The basic tuition fees is 6000 INR. Including hostel fees and other utilities at student pays close to 12 - 13000 INR per semester. there is 1005 tuition fee waiver for SC-ST students. Each student (with CGPA > 6) receives 5000 INR per month as a stipend and 20, 000 INR as annual contingency. So the fees is not expensive at all.

Each student (with CGPA > 6) is eligible for INSPIRE fellowship offered by DST. Some students who qualify for KVPY get 7000 INR per month in their 4th and 5th year. On the basis of this scholarship the on-campus bank can offer small loans for laptop purchase.

Campus Life

The campus life is buzzing with activities and sports. We have good badminton, volleyball and football grounds. We have a good access to cricket grounds from our campus and surrounding BCKV university campus. The gender ratio was poor in early year but can be considered good in the current batches. The Science club of IISER-K takes pride in motivating students and facilitating them with required tools to carry out different projects in Astronomy, robotics, Life-sciences etc. There is an annual Jaguli fair and IISER-K presents innovative porjects by students in 3 different stalls to the public.

Alumni/Alumna

So far 5 batches have passed out from IISER-K. they are very well connected among each other and existing IISER-K students. There is also a considerable number of people who have completed their PhD at IISER-Kolkata and are in touch with each other, alumni and students. There some facebook pages which help us exchange information with each other. It is very common for alumni to host students or other alumni from IISER-K visiting their cities.

Exam Structure

The exams are designed to assess the critical thinking abilities of students. There is never too much textbook-ish pressure. depending on the course under consideration some exams may be very tough but the grading is never on final answers obtained but ra
