Ravenshaw University: An Overview

Ravenshaw University is one of the premier universities of Odisha. It is the oldest college of Odisha. Hostel facilities are really good, but you have to score well at the entrance to avail of good hostel facilities. The library facilities are also very good. With nice libraries like the central library, Kanika library, and departmental libraries. While I was studying for Masters, the faculties were very helpful, especially in my department of Political Science. Try getting into the New PG hostel. It is the best of all hostels. I would suggest making proper usage of the library which is open till night at 9 pm. Overall the academics experience was very good. University lacks proper research facilities though. There is not much emphasis on the dissertation and other research papers. But for overall academic work, it is one of the best in Odisha for social sciences. Many crack NET/JRF in Ravenshaw.

Exams were not difficult to pass. However, to outshine all and be among the toppers it is necessary you work hard. The faculties are really coordinating. I recommend to maintain good relations with faculties and do not shy away from asking them help. Examinations are also very timely and some departments have a focus on internal evaluations and dissertations.

Generally, students try to further their academic careers and try for even higher studies. Many opt out of academics and some get placed especially from professional courses like JMC, BBA, MBA, ITM, and EST. But generally, students opt for higher studies and avail into courses like Mphil and Ph.D.

It is a public institution so it is not at all expensive. If you could get an EWS certificate, university and state governments provide scholarships. In any case fee structure is not expensive.

There is a good facility for libraries at Ravenshaw University. I would recommend using departmental libraries. The central library is full of books and journals and online information. The library is open till 9 pm. There are many fests too in Ravenshaw, each hostel they have their own fest and so does each department. There are many free courses for UGC net and UPSC on campus. Literary competitions are frequent.

I used to stay at the NEW PG hostel. It was the best hostel on campus. It was two sharing. The meal was although not that good that is the case with all public colleges in Odisha. However, everybody is serious with academics and that will rub shoulders with you.

There is a written test. However, from this year, there is going to be a common entrance test for all public universities and colleges in Odisha. So prepare well and try getting into Ravenshaw.
