GATE 2004, I secured AIR 79, GATE Percentile of 99.58I joined M.Tech at IIT Kanpur as I got selected in their interview. IIT Kanpur is good in academics and near to my native (Karnal, haryana).
Course Curriculum Overview
Excellent overall.Few courses were missing because of faculty limitation in few areas. A more courses could have been there. Semiconductor Fabrication, Device Physics, Advanced analog course, Simulation .
Internships Opportunities
I did thesis in IIT Kanpur itself.Internship in M.Tech course is generally less proffered as candidate is expected to do research in campus itself. I did my thesis work under the guidance of Dr. Mazhari. However the candidates who joined internship were getting around Rs. 8000 p.m. of internship stipend.
Placement Experience
Placement was good. All candidates in my class got placement 2 got placed with ST Microelectronics at CTC of 5 Lac per annum. Few got placed with Reliance at CTC of 4 Lac per annum. In 2004, market was little slow but still all students could get a job during course program itself.
Fee Structure And Facilities
That time fees was very reasonable in 2004, This was around Rs. 8000/ per semester. We used to get Rs. 5000/- p.m. of scholarship so fees could be managed from the stipend itself.
Fees and Financial Aid
I used to get Rs. 5000/ p.m. of scholarship, which was sufficient to take care of all needs. So, no loan was needed.However One student in my class took a loan of around Rs. 40,000/- for purchase of computer.
Hostel Facilities
The mess food was excellent where we used to get all type of variety. The food used to change taking care of people from all over the country.The hostel was new and almost all facilities were available.
Alumni/Alumna
Alumni network is good however they communicate less with each other. An improvement area would be to create a common group for all alumini and help each other morally and socially.
Exam Structure
Exams used to consist of assignments, The questions used to be mostly on applications of concepts with Numericals which were tricky.
Faculty
The faculty was over all good. Dr. Baquer Mazhari was the best faculty of VLSI design course of IIT Kanpur in VLSI domain.Few other good faculty were Dr. Alok Dutta
