Masters in English at the heart of Sikkim

Everything I have to say about the university is mostly positive. Teaching courses at attractive fees and offering a glimpse of the beauty of the land Sikkim. Although the infrastructure of the university is a little old, but efforts are being made in renovating the university and putting up a new face for everyone to see. If I had a chance, I would go right back and enroll in Sikkim University.

The course curriculum is one of the best and on the progressive direction which is an asset of its own for the students studying there. Exams take place twice a year structured in two semesters. Two sessional tests in between each semester take place.

There are many multinational companies that recruit yearly from SU, like Ciple, Zydus, Axis bank, etc. Although our department is not a part of the professional unit, there is huge opportunity for internship with monthly stipend as good as 15-20 thousand RS. Also our placement cell assisted me in getting an article editor job in a reputable firm in Delhi, with a salary package of 2.8 lakh.

Sikkim University periodically holds educational workshops that feature reputed violin, tabla and sitar artists for our department of music. There are events & seminars for the department of language, giving us an opportunity to hone our skill and learn from each other. We celebrate foundation day each year where the distinct culture of the North East is celebrated and enjoyed.

The fee structure of the university is the best! I have not seen any other top quality university providing such student friendly fee structure in India. The fees for M.A in English for first year is 5,050 Rs and for the second year is 1,320 Rs. It is a steal deal if you ask me considering the quality of education and culture they provide you and nurture you in.

The best part of the university is, apart from providing excellent courses at very low fees structures, scholarships are provided to students who have a yearly income below 60,000 Rs, and also to students in reserved categories who have obtained more than 55% in their 10+2 or qualified examinations. Monthly 3,000 Rs of scholarship amount is provided.

The university provides with the latest in demand and well maintained gymnasium, a decent platform for sports like badminton and football. The diversity in the students is unmissable! You can see the entire North East mapped up and hand in hand with each other in this university. Personally I have found some of the most friendly and open minded individuals here. Laboratories for the respective departments are present with various equipments that are needed for the examinations.

The hostel facility is decent and worth the value for money, considering the mountaineous terrain of the state. Hostel is available as a 2, 3 and 4 seater/sharing room. Fees of the hostel is on an average 8k per month including the mess food. I have heard there are many new buildings in making which will provide more comfort of the incoming students, making them feel right at home. In case the hostels get filled up there are PG facilities available just around the college with monthly fees around 8-10k along with food.

The seniors I met were some of the most friendly & helpful in nature. They not only assisted me when I had problems in adjusting to this new place but they also made sure I was involved in the cultural and other sports activities held in the university. Now, I as an alumni know how to act and help my peers.

I was considered for this college on the basis of my 12th grades, minimum requirement of which is 50%. Along with it an entrance exam (CAT test) takes place for every UG and PG program aspirant. The attractive fee structure and reputation of the university made me instantly drawn to the course.

The faculty responsible for taking over the masters program in English are not just teachers. They are mentors and have a passion to put forward their knowledge and experience for the better understanding of us students. Some of my most respected teachers are teaching in this university.
