Remarks

College placements should be opened. Students should get practical knowledge while learning theory. Also, as the college push for a compulsory internship, they should facilitate options for the students. There were no college excursion, no field visit, no paid internship or campus placements offered- these should be added to the curriculum.

Course Curriculum Overview

The BMM course curriculum provides industry-specific knowledge and helps students to get a clearer picture of different mass mediums. There are no on-campus placements offered but students have to complete an internship program in the second year in order to gain internal marks. There were no industry visits organised for the students but we were once taken to Khandala (Lonavla) as part of Sociology lectures.

Placement Experience

0.5

The campus doesn't have any placement offered. The internship is compulsory in order to gain internal marks. I did work with Malayala Manorama (Newspaper) for a month in the first year. Students usually go for a masters course right after graduating from Sophia.

College Events

3.5

There were several festivals organised. Literary tests, cultural events, especially Kaleidoscope (college fest) almost 90 % of the college takes part in something or the other as it's a grant fest. Sophia also promotes sports events. Kaleidoscope preparations begin months before and the entire college will be wakened up by regular audition calls, promos and so on. There are several clubs including the famous film society, music, dance and theatre clubs.

Fee Structure And Facilities

The fee in 2016 was around 21-22,000 per semester which was affordable to normal students. They didn't charge additionally on anything else, pretty much everything was covered in the tuition fee itself. The college provided bank loans for students who needed financial support. There were scholarships and sponsorships offered too.

Fees and Financial Aid

Scholarships are offered for students who excel in academics. It is based upon semester-based scores. There were other awards and sponsorships offered yearly.

Campus Life

It is a women's college. There are no student parties organised by the college. Race, religion, economical status, cultural diversity, sexual orientation or ethnicity stood in the way. Students were treated equally and none of the faculty showed any biased attitude. In fact, there was a psychologist assigned to ensure the mental wellbeing of students. Fully functional labs with new facilities helped us in editing and learning software with ease.

Hostel Facilities

The hostel is given according to the merit list, also there are only a few seats for the same. I didn't opt for a hostel and stayed in a PG for Rs 9000 (2 sharing) which was 15 minutes away from the college. The expenses must be much higher now and I cooked food myself to survive. There are packed food (tiffin) available in most of the places at a cheaper price.

Alumni/Alumna

College seniors were really helpful even though there were not many interactions happened. Alumni are all in good positions and well placed in the industry. As the college encourages arts, we can also see a few seniors in films and other media.

Admission

I always dreamt of becoming a journalist. When I was looking for graduation options Sophia took the first position as even the corridors were so familiar to me through advertisements and films. A perfectly built dream college with the most brilliant faculty. Bachelors in Mass Media was the course I opted for and the selection process was based on merit list as well as personal interview. Kaleidoscope (college fest) gave many an opportunity to brush up their talents and show it to the world. BMM certification from Sophia has it's own brand value and I'm proud to be a Sophian.

Faculty

3

We had around eight regular faculties and a few guest lectures. There were talks organised on Saturday's as part of the film society. Students got a wonderful chance to watch films on every Saturday. The expertise held by the faculties really helped us to understand subjects at a deeper level. There were guest lecturers from Tata Institute of Social Sciences and other renowned institutes who enlightened us with more knowledge.

Placement Experience:

During my time the first company that visited our organization was Naukri.com, and feel proud to say that i got placed in the same organization. I am very happy with my placement. But talking about my peers. Number of companies who visited to our institute was compared to low as per our expectations. Majority of the companies who visited the institute were sales based organizations. Very less companies for finance and HR field. This made a difficult call for students.
