Remarks
I would like to conclude my final remarks in few lines. Academics are excellent but we need improvement in quality of teaching. College infrastructure is fine but also need upgrades in various levels. Professors are very humble and dedicated but we also need more informal and good student-professor interaction. We are successful in career but we also need to emphasize on our social life too. We are good in many things but we can be better in much more.
Entrance Preview
I took JEE 2012 and got an AIR 1638. I wanted to get a course related to physics be it aerospace, mechanical or physics. I wanted to study physics but not a BS or MS in physics. So, engineering physics at IIT Delhi seemed a good option for me to study and explore the depth of physics and pursue my interest. It is a research oriented course and research seemed something like a bright prospect to me at that time. So I opted for it.
Course Curriculum Overview
Course curriculum is diverse as mentioned in course curriculum. The courses here are focused on majorly semiconductor physics thin films nano technology, plasma science and quantum mechanics. But one cam say the physics department here is focused on applied physics more than theoretical physics. The courses are sometimes bit more informative than needed. I think there should be more practicality than just theory. But still the faculty is one of the finest in the country for the courses they teach. The faculty is very knowledgeable and dedicated but have lack of proper teaching skills.
Internships Opportunities
College does not allow its students to do 3rd year internship at our own college. It helps and asks the student to go out in the world arena to explore opportunities and challenges in different universities and industries worldwide. Other than our official 3rd year internship we can do interns within our college. Within the college there is stipend limited to eating and staying facilities but the resources needed for intern project are taken care well.
Placement Experience
Most of the 1000 students who sit for placements are placed. Package varies from 1 crore to 5 lakhs. The highest packages are for people from CS background and offered by companies such as Microsoft,Google,Facebook and Samsung. Then come the consulting giants like Bain and company,Parthenon,Mc Kinsey which offer around 15-30 lakhs. Now a days a lot of startup such as Ola,Flipkart,Grofers offer attractive packages for people from coding background as well as management positions. They offer packages ranging from 9-20 lakhs depending on candidates and positions. Apart from these there are lot of core technical companies such as Daikin(12-18 lakhs),ITC (17 Lakhs) which offer good compensation.
College Events
We have a lot of clubs ranging from technical to recreational. Drama, dance, astronomy, robotics,Student formula one, painting, music, photography, rubiks cube club, coding club, electronics club, social service, entrepreneurship club, economics club etc. You can like any of them and easily enter as a trainee. We have the technical festival TRYST, sports fest SPORTECH and the cultural and the biggest fest of north india RENDEZVOUS. We also have festivals organised by literary club LITERATI and management fest organised by Department of Management studies IIT Delhi. All these fests are big enough to ensure participation from colleges across India of all these Rendezvous attracts about 10k students from various colleges across the country for various participation in qulaifying competitions for dance, drama, fashion etc. Every year we have a bollywood celebrity between us making the festival even more exciting.
Fees and Financial Aid
Yes based on the income of your parents and All India rank we can get free academic fees scholarship. I am currently availing this. Other than these there are numerous small stipends or scholarships being offered by Alumni's of IIT's to department toppers or poor students . For category students with poor background free Messing is also provided. For any student of IIT banks are ready to give loans for interest rates as low as 8% p/a.
Campus Life
Campus life is what adds life to the hectic and sometimes boring curriculum. Although we have major issue of skewed sex ratio. Having only 10% girls in campus leads to drastic drop in boys dating girls socialising and being in realtionships. Adding the all these the few girls present are also under tremendous pressure due to commitments and to perform in par with their peers.
Hostel Facilities
Hostel rooms are very old and less spacious. Mess food is not good and a very big problem for students. Fees are about 50k for academics and 20 k from mess+hostel each semester. It comes to a total of 1.5 lakh per year. The fees are not expensive. The academics are very well and upto mark. But the hostels and mess certainly need improvements. IIT Delhi has a shortage of space so in first year 3 people live in a double room. In the second year even worse students have to adjust 2 people in a single room. There are PG's nearby with rent around 5k and messing 3k. But most people prefer to stay in Campus to remain updated with the campus. So the adjust in the congested rooms. To tackle the food problem we have food outlets and night messes open 24*7 all the time happenings inside campus.
Exam Structure
The course curriculum is somewhat hectic. During the normal days we get some time for ourselves . But the timely quizzes, assignments and projects eat up the rest of the time. Plus during exams its very hectic. I would rate the work pressure as 8.5/10. Its not just because the curriculum. Its mainly due to the hard working peers that we toil even harder thus pushing each other's limits together.
