Remarks
Good aspects: The campus of UCMS is a beautiful one. One would really like to spend time there. The college is fully air-conditioned. 24hr open reading room is there to study in the college area of campus. In addition to this, there are separate reading rooms in hostels as well. Every hostel has a canteen built within. There is a library with a good collection of books and internet facilities. Bad aspects: College canteen has many unhygienic practices. Security issues within the campus. Locality outside campus is not good. The condition of the boy's hostel and JRD hostel is not that good. Why I chose this college?: On the basis of rankings of colleges all India and within Delhi as I am a Delhi citizen. I could not get MAMC at my rank, hence the choice was between UCMS and VMMC. UCMS has good exposure to patients and good quality teaching. There is a 50% DU quota for PG admissions as well in DU MBBS colleges (MAMC, UCMS, LHMC). I asked about college from various friends, seniors, and doctors as well.
Course Curriculum Overview
MBBS was something that I thought of as I entered class 11. The uniqueness of experiences that a medical student and doctor get to face is something that fascinates me. Hence I decided to pursue this course. The faculty-student ratio is good enough for every subject except the 1st year subjects of Physiology, Biochemistry, and Anatomy where faculty is less. The quality of teaching in both pre and para-clinical subjects is good enough. Although the presentation teaching method makes it somewhat difficult for the topics to be understood. Moreover, the quality of teaching in 1st-year subjects has declined since 2018 after many first-year faculties left the college. Exams are conducted timely in the 1st and 2nd years but this practice goes off a little from the 3rd year onwards where only semester exams and proofs are conducted.
Internships Opportunities
The internship is offered within the same hospital that is associated with the college. It starts after you pass your final professional exam of MBBS. It has to be done for a period of 1 year. The stipend during an internship is 23000 per month at Delhi University. During the internship, 15 days -1 month posting occurs in each department of clinical MBBS in rotation. The internship is but of a hectic job where you have to do a lot of work and get a lot of thrashing from your seniors
Placement Experience
Placements are not there in MBS colleges. Most people like to pursue Post Graduation i.e. MD/MS after completing MBBS for which there is the entrance exam of NEET - PG (To become NEXT soon). Post-graduation in UCMS has a stipend of 70k-80k depending on the year in which the person is. Post-graduation is a three-year course. Following Post-graduation, a person can apply for the post of Senior Resident (SR) in a hospital or further prepare for NEET - SS for a super - specialty in a field. Even after MBBS, a person can apply for the post of Junior Resident (JR).
Fees and Financial Aid
MBBS from a government medical college is not at all expensive. Fees vary from year to year depending on the number of subjects and practicals conducted for them. But in general, the fees of a single professional year does not exceed 8000. Hostel expenses are different where room expenses are around 2000-3000 per year with separate mess fees of 7000-8000 for 6 months. After completing 4.5 years of medical education and passing the final professional exam, the duty of an intern starts for one 1year with a stipend of 23,000 per month. The Postgraduate students get a stipend of around 70k-80k per month depending on the year in which they are.
Campus Life
The annual fest of UCMS is Ripple conducted in March-April. There is also a sports week conducted in the months of October - November. The library has a good collection of books and journals. There is even a separate journal section in the library with an enormous collection of generals. There is good involvement of sports and extracurricular activities as well with various sports society including cricket, table tennis, football, basketball, etc. There are 2 playgrounds for the conduction of extracurricular activities. Also, a special sports week is conducted as mentioned above in the months of October - November for a period of 5 days. Other extracurricular activity society includes Music (Plexus society), Art (Artifex society), Western dance society, Choreography society, Dramatics society (Manchayan), Fashion society. Social groups like self-help groups eg. SPACE are present for moral support to children and sharing of disturbing thoughts and practices. Also every society has Facebook and Insta pages.
Hostel Facilities
The cost of 18000 is like 2000-3000 room expenses per yr 7000-8000 mess expenses per 6 months*2 Facilities in room: Study table, chair, Bed (without mattress), stool (+/-), Ceiling Fan, Electricity supply, Power socket, Dustbin, balcony (from first floor onwards). Meal quality: Fixed menu for every week gets repeated. Meal taste is not good enough. Many times excess oil is put in food. Proper washing of utensils is not there. Still, the condition of mess food is better as compared to other college hostels in the country. The menu consists of 1 sabzi and 1 dal/rajma/chole with chapati and rice mostly. Salad varies depending on the season (carrot/radish/onion) For registration, a from is provided from hostel office in the campus which has to duly filled and submitted back. Then occurs the allotment where rooms are allotmed on chit basis to the students who filled the forms
