Remarks
Helps a boy become a man, a girl a lady. However there are cases where everyone may not be able to handle the academic rigor or the personal liberty and some end up worthless junkies doing drugs, smoking pot or drinking away their potential.
Entrance Preview
JU IR BA ENTRANCE EXAM 2009. Also had offers from JU HISTORY and PRESIDENCY HISTORY. But joined JU IR. Oldest International Relations dept in India with great faculty and good peers.
Course Curriculum Overview
Excellent course. Total of 18 Hons and 6 non-dept courses with flexible cafeteria system facilitates inter-disciplinary learning. Honors courses are comprehensive and cover a wide variety of topics from traditional topics to emerging issues and areas.
Internships Opportunities
JU institutionally does not provide internship to students. But teachers (as well as seniors) are encouraging and help students with contacts, advice and in other ways. I worked with Institute of Pyschological & Educational Research and Indian Council of Social Science Research. Many work in places like NGOs, Media, think-tanks. The SYLFF Fellowship at MA level and beyond is the highest paid fellowship in social science in India with opportunities for networking and foreign tour.
Placement Experience
Not much of institutionalized placements. But JU degree along with skills learned and networking helps a lot in getting jobs. Most students get decent jobs after graduation on their own steam and volition. But the exposure and opportunities that JU offers is spectacular and acts as a catalyst for employment.
College Events
Fests, Sports, Debates, Quizzes, Drama, Fashion show, Youth Parliament, Mock UN, Photography contests, youth conferences JU is always happening and exciting! Not to mention departmental seminars, picnics and other activities. The dozen or so clubs and societies keep the spirits up and running! There is even a Durga Pujo on the campus.
Fee Structure And Facilities
Just 75 bucks a month. You pay semester wise and exam fee of INR 44 once in six month and session fee of INR 50 Clubs cost just 10 bucks a year In fact the process of paying is more cumbersome than the fees. A 5 STAR university with such facilities at this rate probably makes it the most cheapest institute in world.
Fees and Financial Aid
I received SYLFF Fellowship at MA level. No need for loans. Scholarships for needy students and reserved categories are provided by both the university and its Alumni Association.
Campus Life
Very liberal and tolerant campus. Its a politically active and conscious campus but no one is dominated/ influenced / or forced into something. Most students are into either studies or fun. Religious and social tolerance is at pinnacle. Extra-curricular activities are one of the best in India.
Hostel Facilities
Didn't stay in hostel. Was a day student. Had friends from hostel. Hostels are decent but rooms are scarce. There are 9 canteens inside the campus and dozens of eateries and restaurants nearby campus. Food of all shapes, sizes, tastes and price are available from the tasty to bland, from dirt cheap to expensive.
Alumni/Alumna
Established Alumni Association. But the departmental seniors and informal peer networks is extensive and most helpful. Whether exams, employment, advice, this comes in most handy.
Exam Structure
As years progress, the curriculum and exams get demanding and more intense gradually. First and Second years are fun and chilling. Third year onward becomes quite hectic with 4 papers and exams almost every week. But the learning process is great and what you make of this time determines a lot of your future.
Faculty
Most faculty is very good. Some are not that great though. Overall however teachers are quite approachable, student friendly, dedicated and eager to help. The atmosphere is very homely and informal. The dept becomes like a second home and family soon.
