Remarks
Vishwakarma Government Engineering College (VGEC) is among the best engineering colleges in Gujarat. The college is located in Ahmedabad city and has some of the best faculties from Gujarat. Admission to this college is governed by a committee called the ACPC (http://www. jacpcldce. ac. in/). Students who have appeared in the Gujarat Common Entrance Test (GujCET) can apply for admission to this college.
Course Curriculum Overview
Power Electronics is a highly research oriented subject. It is a branch of electrical engineering that deals with control and conversion of electrical power from one form to another. The applications of power electronics are found in consumer electronics, electric vehicles, power transmission, smart grid, electrical drives and a lot more. I decided to join this course because I was interested in electrical engineering. Since the cutoff for electrical engineering in this college was higher than this branch, I couldn't get an admission there. Most of the students who like electrical engineering end up in this branch because the cutoff of electrical engineering department of VGEC is higher than the power electronics department. Faculties of the department are very co-operative. They will do everything in their capability to make sure that you have a great experience in college. The only issue with the department is with the faculty to student ratio. It's almost 1:50. This is the reason why faculties of this department are always overburdened with work. They often miss lectures to complete their work. Exams in VGEC are moderately difficult. Unlike private colleges, here you will have to be consistent in your work to score above 8 points. You have to complete your lab work and assignments properly and get them evaluated regularly. It is not difficult to pass, but it is very difficult to score high.
Placement Experience
Companies like Cognizant, Capgemini, TCS, Hitachi, Torrent Power, Wipro, etc. come for campus recruitment through the college. Placement differs from the department to department but around 30-50% of the students get placed. Others either go for M. Tech in NITs/IITs, MS from abroad or MBA.
College Events
Life at campus is very dull. The hostel facility is poor. University Techfest is conducted once in two years. College has not conducted it's own Techfest since almost 5 years now. There are regular technical and non technical events going on round the year though. Library facility is average. The library closes at 6 PM. In terms of extra curricular activity, there isn't much either. The college has space but it is utilised poorly. There is a basket ball ground and a badminton ground but both of them are not maintained properly. VGEC has active IEEE student branch, NSS branch and a lot of other clubs run by students and faculties. The people are nice but the clubs lack funding and resources.
Fee Structure And Facilities
VGEC is a government engineering college. The fee is as low as Rs. 2500 per semester. This includes teaching, examination, and hostel fees. The students of this college can easily get an education loan for studies. Companies like Cognizant, Capgemini, TCS, Hitachi, Torrent Power, Wipro, etc. come for campus recruitment through the college. Some of the companies canceled the offer letters to the ongoing pandemic but the average package that was offered to students of this college was around 3. 5 LPA, which is a little low.
Hostel Facilities
I have never stayed at the hostel myself but from what I have heard from my friends, VEGC hostel is a horrible place to live in. Noting except a bed, cupboard, a fan and a desk is provided in hostel rooms. The hostel is pretty safe for girls but the basic facilities like washrooms are not maintained properly. Food tastes absolutely the worst. The price for food is low(less than Rs. 50 per plate).
Admission
The admission was purely based on 12th PCM marks and JEE Mains back in 2016. Now instead of JEE Mains, students have to appear in GujCET for admissinon.
