Remarks
Asutosh College, Kolkata has one of the best psychology departments in Kolkata. The head of the department and other professors are highly qualified and know the subject matter pretty well. They encourage students to develop an interest in the subject matter and are always very helpful. The college provides an amazing atmosphere of learning along with extracurriculars for the overall development of an individual. Asutosh College is located in the south of Kolkata, hence it's very convenient for students from any part of the city to travel to and from college. Out-station students however stay at hostels or PGs near the college. A lot of PG facilities are available near the college. The college has a ragging-free atmosphere. Seniors and the faculty members are all very helpful. Speaking of the psychology department, there has not been found any bad facet as of now. Admission is based on 12th marks. The college releases a merit list, based on which selected students are called in for counseling and admissions.
Course Curriculum Overview
The curriculum is by the latest UGC guidelines and is under the CBCS system. We have 6 semesters, wherein along with the core courses, it's mandatory to take additional subjects like economics, history, sociology, etc. In the 4th semester, the curriculum includes two mandatory skill development courses like behavior development, soft skills, and a few others. The faculty is highly skilled, from Ph.D.'s too clinical and organizational psychologists. We have two-semester exams and pre-semester exams in a year.
Placement Experience
There aren't any placements for undergrad students from the psychology department. Placement however depends upon the course. Courses like MSc, BBA, etc have a varied number of placements depending upon the number of companies visiting the campus.
Fees and Financial Aid
The fee structure isn't very high as it's a semi-government institute. The fee structure is around 10-20k per year as of 2021. The cost of the study is low. College, however, provides financial aid to students, if needed. Various scholarships are also available under the state government, which the college encourages students to apply for. There aren't any jobs on campus, but a student can take up a part-time job if they want to.
Campus Life
The campus is highly diverse and competitive. Everyone is busy with their own thing and hardly people have time for others. It's fun to hang around with the group though. The campus is ragging-free. College has a main library and two more reading rooms. It has a gymnasium, common room, auditorium, canteen, etc. Asutosh college hosts it's annual fest where known celebrities are called in to perform.
Interview Experience
I was called in for an interview session after getting my name on the merit list. The interview was taken by the H.O.D and a few other professors. There were basic questions on my field of study and previous academics. After the interview, there was a document verification round, followed by fees payment and other technical procedures.
