Remarks
I specifically applied for SVNIT as It has one of the finest Mechanical Labs in India and It is in my city. I got admission in General Catagory, Though there is 50% off Home State Quota. The admission process for any IIT, NIT, IIIT, and some other colleges is similar, you have to apply through the JOSSA portal. To take admission in SVNIT Mechanical 95 PR is good enough for General Catagory. All other Criteria to be followed as per JOSSA. Due to the LockDown situation in the country, counseling was on online mode, though SVNIT provided enough time to submit required documents.
Course Curriculum Overview
The reason for choosing Mechanical Engineering is the movie '3 idiots. Jokes apart, I am really convinced by the level of Mechanical Engineering in SVNIT. The faculty here is the best. 2 Professors from my department got listed in the Top 100 scientists in the whole world (only these 2 representing India in the list) last year. Faculty Student ratio is perfect here. In some subjects, we have 3 or 4 faculties teaching us their respective unit, who are specialized in that field(ie. done their Ph.D. in that). Every faculty here is Ph.D. from well-known IITs. The teaching method is at its best, though the method of teaching is in an online mode right now. Exam patterns are perfect as an engineering college. We have 2 ClassTests, Viva, MidSem, EndSem exams, regular assignments too. The exam is quite difficult for an average student but not impossible.
Internships Opportunities
As I am in the first year of my course, I do not have much exposure to internships right now, which may be due to my introverted nature. I have heard of my seniors that nearly everyone is doing internships or working on a successful start-up from the 2nd year onwards. Some of my seniors frequently visit foreign countries like Dubai for this kind of internship work.
Placement Experience
Students can have proper internships in their dream companies from 2nd year. in the final year, there is campus placement and top tech companies of the world like Microsoft, google, amazon, etc visits here. This can vary year by year. In the year 2019-20, 529 students got placed in campus placement maximum package offered was 37.50 lakhs per annum. The average package for computer science is 13.32 lakh per annum. Maximum placements were offered by software/IT companies for all branches(34%). 25% of students got packages above 9 lakh per annum. Companies hiring were NXP, J.PMorgan, HSBC, GE, DE Shaw&Co, Credit Suisse, Future First, MasterCard, OLA, TATA, Infosys, L & T, Vedanta, Godrej, TATA HITACHI, and many more. 67.56% of Btech students got campus placements. In the last year 2020-21, the highest package in campus placement was 40 lakh per annum from the ECE branch. I will be opting for MTech after the completion of my degree.
Fees and Financial Aid
The tuition Fee is 62,500 Rs per semester but no need to worry about that. There are lots of national scholarships and state scholarships that you can claim. In addition, there is Fee Remission. As per MHRD notice in 2016, NITs and IITs need to give 100% of tuition fee return to the students having family annual income less than 1,00,000 Rs and 66.67% of that to students having family annual income in between 1,00,000 to 5,00,000 Rs. You can be an intern in lots of projects here. It may be Technical or Marketing or etc. No need to worry, you can get enough internships with/without a stipend.
Campus Life
The largest cultural fest of its kind in Gujarat is "SPARSH" of SVNIT. It started in 1993. There are so many fests and clubs that I cannot write all here. Some examples are AERO, FSAE & PHEONIX, Drishti, ACM, LAC, Bose.x, and many more. Due to the online mode, I did not get a chance to explore the library but I know that SVNIT has one of the biggest and finest libraries. The library has air-conditioning too. ON this topic I cannot provide you with much information as I could not have experience of it due to this pandemic.
