Remarks

Upon passing out from 12th I had clearly set my mind to pursue a course with finance at the core and to do so in a reputed Institute in Odisha. My research as well as advice from family and friends indicated that BGU and XUB were the two universities that best suited my academical and infrastructural needs. I preferred BGU over the latter since, among other beneficial factors, BGU had a far better proximity to my residential area than XUB. The criteria for admission were securing minimum 50% marks or equivalent CGPA in the 10+2 Board Examination and the selection process was also based on merit from academic performance in 10th and 12th. The entire admission process from the point of application to the selection was incredibly smooth with prompt responses from the Admissions department throughout and documentation was also hassle-free. There were counselling days scheduled for parents and students which unfortunately neither I nor my parents could attend.

Course Curriculum Overview

4.5

I chose to pursue B.Com(H) to equip myself with pertinent skills and knowledge in finance and accentuate my personal interest in diving deeper into various financial fields that I believed this course would give me the base for. I believe the BSoC Faculty are some of the best that the State has to offer; though I also believe the Institute could do slightly better in bringing in more Guest Faculty members in the current situation of Online teaching, something which was rather commonplace during the offline/campus teaching days. The Faculty members are all highly qualified individuals most of whom have the most recent educational experience from highly reputed Institutes which they in turn apply to their own teaching methodology with apt research and seemless presentations. The term examinations are conducted every 5 months or so and the question papers are optimally set keeping in mind the range of the curriculum as well as the capability of the students.

Internships Opportunities

3

The Internship opportunities available in BGU are rather attractive with several industry leaders reaching out to capable students in the Birla crowd. The allure of internships continues to thrive even in lockdown situations as many students are receiving contracts through online mode into their fields of expertise and interest which will eventually train the young minds to be efficient and effective.

Placement Experience

2.5

The placements provided by the college are rather lucrative with packages going as high as 10.2 lakhs. Although B.Com(H) doesn't currently seem to have the provision of campus placements for undergrads the skills and knowledge imparted throughout the course ensure that the student leaves the curriculum fully equipped with industry intelligence and knowledge of the craft. This is why upon receiving my degree I intend to further pursue an MBA in Finance to build up on the knowledge gained through this university's efforts.

Fees and Financial Aid

The fees structure for this course is fairly reasonable considering the quality of education being imparted. Being a non-accommodation student the fees are 75,000 per instalment plus 2,000 Insurance premiums apart from the 30,000 that was paid as advance at the point of admission. The university also provides Bus transport facility for day boarders for which the Institute used to charge 12,000. The total tuition fees add up to about roughly 3.84 lakhs. BGU also provides scholarships to students who have consistently performed well in their academics all the way from securing minimum 60% or equivalent CGPA in their 10+2 to Graduation. The university is yet to have a placements program for B.Com(H) undergrads but many postgrad students from various courses have been placed in lucrative firms with high stipends.

Campus Life

5

The BGU Campus is possibly the most attractive of any other institution in the state with serene patches of greenery surrounding the university both inside and outside the walls. The Campus life is what always keeps an air of excitement in the classrooms and corridors thanks in part to the innumerable facilities that the university provides and also because of the cultural and social involvement between the students in the form of fests and extracurricular events. Freshers' Party, Sports Fest and BGU Fest are some of the regular events that take place in the campus along with beauty pageants and ramp walks. The university also holds its own rendition of a Model United Nations (MUN). Also one of the main features of this university is the existence of several Conduits that are run exclusively by the students and help maintain the University's organization and integrity through the synergy of all the Conduits such as Sports, Food and Literary.

Course Curriculum Overview:

The course curriculum of B.Com under Sambalpur University covers important subjects like Accounting, Business Law, Economics, Management and Taxation which are essential for future studies and careers in finance or commerce. The structure is simple to follow and helps students build a good base in theory. Semester exams are conducted on time and the difficulty level is moderate. A student who consistently studies can score well without extreme pressure. However, there is a lack of practical exposure such as industry visits, internships or real-world business case studies. Also, subjects related to modern digital business trends like data analytics, advanced Excel, and GST practicals should be included to make students more job-ready. Overall, the curriculum is relevant but needs more updates to match the current professional requirements

Placement Experience:

In our college, final-year students are eligile for campus placements. While i don't recall the specific companies that visited, one of my friends interviewed with Axis Bank and got selected with a package of around 2.4 lakh. The exact percentage of students are placed and details of average or highest packages are unclear to me, but the placements process provides opportunities of those actively seeking jobs. After completing my degree, I plan to pursue an independent career rather that seeking a traditioinal job placement.
