Remarks

Everything and everyone is good about the college except the mentality of few girls who happen to possess (to be very frank-a very narrow mind) and because of which most of us have to suffer.

Entrance Preview

It has been my dream since class nine, to delve deep into the subject I love and the subject being English. Being an arts student,i could never score much since according to the very belief and rules, it is very difficult to score a satisfactory percentage when it comes to the arena of Humanities. Nevertheless after I graduated from Asutosh college, Calcutta University with a 49% ,I got the opportunity to participate in the admission process (which was taken in the form of an interview) in the highly esteemed Shri Shikshayatan College, Calcutta university. Fortunately enough I made it. Being a general candidate, I initially thought i would have no luck. But thankfully enough, I did well in the interview session and I was chosen along with 52 other girls to complete my post graduation in English.

Course Curriculum Overview

4

The department of English has sufficient extremely helpful and talented professors who provides us with all the necessary stuff for the pupils to go forward with their further studies. We get to participate in various literary fests and activities. We get to spend hours in the huge library and take down notes. In a competitive jobs market, achieving a postgraduate degree can give you that extra edge that employers are looking for, leading to faster career progression, increased responsibility and a higher salary. Post graduate study involves the analysis of real life scenarios, enabling you to gain evaluation skills and research techniques that are a real asset in the workplace and teaching career post graduate study with enhanced subject knowledge develops transferable skills, such as project management, research, teamwork, lateral and creative thinking, self discipline and motivation.

Internships Opportunities

Since I belong to the humanities section,i do not know much about internship. Nevertheless, I have heard about how active and successful our college is when it comes to provide with internships to the students.A number of big companies like TCS, Mahindra, Indigo airlines, etc have offered internships with good stipends. Other than that, companies like onesense.com have offered full time jobs. Many students have been working with these companies for the past few years now, and most of them seem to have achieved job satisfaction. There is a placement cell in our college in which the students have to enroll themselves on order to seize the opportunities the college provides for the students' placements. There are a large number of companies that offer internships for the graduates as well as graduating students in the college. Most of these companies offer good stipends to the interns. Seldom there are companies that offer with full-paid jobs to graduates.

Fees and Financial Aid

Far my knowledge goes no such scholarship facility is provided by the college the loan facilities, however, maybe available but I am personally unaware of anyone who has availed either of these facilities.

Campus Life

5

Though the college schedule is little boring. The College aims at imparting liberal education which helps in developing the total personality of students and in bringing about all-round growth of their personality and making them self reliant. The college is committed to maintining a good academic standards. The college doors are open for everyone irrespective of caste, creed, religion or language. There are people from different parts of te country.

Hostel Facilities

3.5

The library is very nice there is a swimming pool as well the classrooms are well built they do no provide any hostel facility on or off campus. However the canteen food is fine though a little expensive, but the quality serves the purpose. There is no non vegetarian food available inside the college canteen. The college does not have any hostel or PG facility for the student the students have to make separate accommodation arrangements for themselves. The college is located in one of the busiest joints of the city, and so, there adequate accommodation facilities available for the students.

Alumni/Alumna

The seniors do their duty only, they aren't much helpful. However they do come forward to help us when every we call for them.

Exam Structure

2 YEAR M.A. ENGLISH (Day Classes) Affiliated to the University of Calcutta a course exclusively for female students only examination System : Part I at the end of the First Year, Part II at the end of the Second Year there is an internal assessment of 20marks on January and an external of 80 marks on July which leads to 100marks each paper. There are four papers in each year which amounts to a total of eight papers of 800marks in total. For other subjects,Apart from the annual semester held by the University every year, the college holds a mid-term examination and a selection examination. The mid-term exam is held sometime near October or November, while the selection exams are held two months prior the final university semester exam. As our professors provide us with quality guidance, we aren't too stressed out during the exam times. But yes, as our syllabus is humungous, it obviously gets hectic for us at times.

But thankfully enough, I did well in the interview session and I was chosen along with 52 other girls to complete my post graduation in English.I filled up the admission form online in the college website. I along with numerous other students waited in the long queue to take the interview. I wasn't nervous though. I was confident with my preparation. The interviewers were the respective teachers and head of the department of English. I was lucky to have been a part of this interview session and luckier to have been selected as one of its students.

Placement Experience:

Most of the placements that took place at least for the literature departments ended up with people joining educational institutes and NGOs. Very few joined corporate enterprises like Accenture. But it does provide almost a 5 LPA, if well placed. It is academically rigorous, therefore academics are weighed more than industry.

Students are eligible for applying for internships after the 3rd semester, and students can apply for placements only after 4th semester. Companies like Ericsson, Ernst and Young, JPMG makes visits our department for mostly analyst roles for economic and fundamental trading decisions. The highest offer made was 45LPA while the average is 7.5LPA. The median pakage is 8LPA. Almost 90% students secure placements after completing their degree since the Training and placement cell is pretty proactive in securing good company visits. I plan for investing and analyst roles in banking companies. I would sit for placements hoping for the same.
