Krishna Agarwal's Review On Indian Institute Of Information Technology - [IIIT], Allahabad

For getting admission into IIIT-A, One need to give JEE-Mains Examination. I scored 201 marks in the exam and the final merit after combining the 12th marks had my name at 9070 rank. I chose this college because of the fact that it is one of the finest institutes of India in the field of IT and allied sciences. It was ranked number 8 among all the engineering colleges of India in 2008 by India Today.

The course structure is extremely built in a very comprehensive way. We have undoubtedly the best IT structure in India as compared to any other college in India because IIIT-A is the apex institute. Also it has been given INI (Institute of National Importance) status. We study core subjects of Computer Science and IT as early as 2nd and 3rd Semesters.

Internships are offered for the pre final year students for a period of 8 - 10 weeks either in India or abroad. These internships are not mandatory. They are optional. The stipend offered ranges from 25000 INR to 1 Lakh INR per month depending upon the companies and their respective roles. All software companies visit our campus.

As far as placement of IIIT-A is concerned, it is one of the best in the country. It is as good as any other IIT or NIT in the country. Please note I am talking only about IT branch of IIIT-A. All the software companies be it small or giant visit the campus. Over 70 companies visit the campus for merely 400 students. If I talk about domestic scenario highest package offered approximately 29.5 LPA (CTC), and the lowest being 3.5 LPA.

We have two major festivals that take place in our 100 acre campus. Effervescence (Cultural and Management Fest), Aparoksha (Tech Fest). Apart from this we have ASMITA (Annual Sports Meet for IIIT-A). All events are celebrated in a grand manner. Celebrities visit our campus. Overall Its a huge gathering from all over Indian Colleges and its just amazing.

IIIT-A is a Government Institution. Fee is fair. For my batch it was 35000/- per semester as tuition Fee and approximately 12000/- for mess and hostel charges per semester. Apart from this we have somewhere around 10000/- as charges like (Gymkhana fee, alumini fund, Medicine Fee and all other miscellaneous charges). Over all with less than 5 Lakhs, one can be an engineer.

As far as I know, we have merit scholarships and merit cum means scholarships. Merit scholarships are given to those those students who stand in top 10 positions after each semester. Merit cum Means Scholarship are given to those who have their Grades Above than a particular cut off and their annual parental income below a particular level. I have availed the Merit Scholarships (36000 INR each semester).

Our Campus Life is vibrant. Every Month some event or the other keeps on happening. Gender Ratio is approximately 3:10 (3 girls in every 10 boys). Students from all over India study in IIIT-A be it South India or North Eastern states apart from normal North Indian or West Indian states. All sports are present in the campus campus be it Swimming, Squash, Tennis, Badminton, Basketball.

Hostel Facilities are extremely good as compared to any other Government College of India. We have twin sharing rooms for 3 years and single room for the last year. All students can get hostels. 3500 INR is the total sum that one need to give as hostel rent. Mess charges are calculated on daily basis (Rs 98 per day). Hostel campus have all facilities including indoor and outdoor games.

As you move down the line, courses are light and you are left with ample time to study on your own and make your own path.Its only the initial years where you have to toil hard. There are only two exams that happen during a semester : Mid Semester Examinations and End Semester Examinations.

The admission process was carried out by CSAB (a body which manages everything) just after the results were declared in the month of July. All the instructions were given to us by their respective website. We needed to fill the preferable colleges in an order and based on our rank allocation had to be done. Once the college was allocated, we needed to report at the institute with all our documents and some initial fee.

Faculty is extremely talented but most of the time you have to study on your own. The pay scale of Faculty is same as of IIT faculty. They are helpful ,you can go upto them and contact anytime if you have doubts. Student to faculty ratio is 100 : 1 (yes its not good but every other Indian institute suffers from this problem).
