SHREYAS NAYAK's Review On R V College Of Engineering - [RVCE], Bangalore

Good remarks : The college management has endeavored to ensure almost every process is transparent and simple to do. This has ensured that any transactions which may need to be done are done in a streamlined manner. Also , the deans are generally pro-students and help the students through any emergency that they may face. Bad remarks : The fund disbursement to technical groups usually requires long days of running around between various offices to get their approval . Yet sometimes, fund aren't disbursed in time and this may affect the functioning of the club.

I took the Karnataka Common Entrance Test (K-CET) in order to get into engineering. I scored 166/180 and stood 6th in the state. I went on to opt for ECE in RVCE because it is one of the best colleges in the state and I had heard very good things about its electronics course. I was interested in both the coding aspect as well as Physics aspect of devices and believed that a course in electronics and communication would be an ideal course for me. There was no interview process as seats for engineering were allotted by the KEA through a computerised allocation process based on the student's preference and merit. The entire process was smooth and frustration-free.

When i started the course , I was told by the teachers that the curriculum was designed keeping in mind the needs of the industry of today. Although I initially had my reservations about this claim, I fast found out that they weren't fibbing. On comparing the curriculum with that of other colleges , I found out that our curriculum was clearly better designed, with a focus on both the theoretical part and applied part. A smartly designed "self study" component was integrated into the curriculum of each subject which rewarded innovation . There was a constant focus on experimentation and trying new things through the well equipped laboratories and subject experts in the department who would constantly guide us through any rough patches.

There has been talk about them providing internships, but as far as I know, They don't offer internships at the bachelor degree level. Research internships exist at the masters level. However since I haven't been associated with the program, I can't say much about it.

RVCE has a long standing reputation for providing excellent placements to its students. In my batch , of around 220 people, 190 people applied for placements and nearly 186 people were placed. The hghest offer was 19.5 LPA and the lowest was 3.6 LPA. Companies that came to the campus include big names like : TI, NI, Microsoft, Cisco and even a bunch of startups like Practo, endurance, Helpchat, Myntra , catamaran ventures,etc. Around 200 companies came for recruitment and the average salry for the batch stood at 5LPA .

RVCE hosts a plethora of events technical events include the department wise fests held every year Also, various technical clubs exist which students can approach if they feel they want ot gat hand on work. Cultural events include 8th mile the college fest which is the biggest fest in South India after the IITs. Participation in this festival was always huge various Spic Macay concerts, numerous plays by the dramatics group, various quizzes, debates, etc conducted by the respective groups. The major management fest would be conducted by the entrepreneurship cell and this too was a major event in the college various entrepreneurs would appear at the venue and there were competitions to test budding managers for their skills and so on.

For a merit student, the fee structure averages to around Rs. 50,000 per year for tuition and an additional Rs. 60,000 per year for accommodation. This is a decent fee which is neither too low nor too high. However, students who belong to the middle class will need to opt for a student loan for the course.

I have not availed any scholarships since I belong to the GM category of student and my father's income is above the threshold set by the college. However, in my knowledge many scholarships exist for candidates who hail from either SC/ST, OBC and economically disadvantaged backgrounds with a dedicated section setup for scholarships. Loans are generally available with multiple banks setup near the college. The process is not always easy as it requires a lot of paperwork , but odds are that any one who applies for a loan generally gets one.

The campus life is definitely vibrant and fun with various student groups and activities. Various activities are held with regularity and the fact that there are many facilities like fields and courts for sports along with labs , a medical centre ,a bank, multiple food courts and even a temple (!) ensure that there is never a dull moment on campus. The gender ratio depends on the stream of study with mechanical having just 2 girls in the whole batch and biotechnology having only 6 boys in the whole batch. However, overall there exists a healthy gender ratio in the college. A particularly surprising fact however is that only Men's accommadation exists on campus and the women's hostels are located a good distance outside of the campus. Although, they're given adequate measure as far as I've heard, the location is extremely inconvenient for the female students in some cases. Also, people from all over the country study in the institution ad therefore it is a melting pot of culture. No one is made to feel left out and no one has been targeted for their place of origin or mother tongue. Overall, there is a healthy cultural diversity in the college. Extracurricular activities are encouraged and many clubs and groups exist in the college.From sports like basketball, tennis, volleyball, to clubs like the quiz club, dramatics group, debate group to technical clubs like the robotics club (Astra), the hybrid vehicle club(Chimera), the racing club, etc, the college has them all. All the clubs are extremely active and have brought laurels to the college after participation in various national and international competitions . The clubs ensure that everyone can do what they love and learn a lot on the way.

The hostels were generally excellent. Separate hostels exist for each year of the course. This is done in order to reduce incidents of ragging. The first 2 years have rooms which have to be shared with 2 other people. The third year hostel rooms are for 2 people. The final year hostel rooms are single occupancy. The rooms and amenities are very good as far as hostel rooms go . All rooms have access to quality furniture, Wi-fi and timely repairs. The bathrooms and toilets were also plenty in number. So, there would normally be no troubles for any one before they went to class. However, rooms are generally short in supply so many people tend to opt for nearby PG accommodation whose costs vary from nearly Rs. 7000 per month to Rs 20000 per month.

The alumni network is generally active and they visit the college frequently. We had the opportunity to actively interact with our seniors and students who had passed out before us in various capacities. They were always ready to help us out in regards to things like placement training, campus life and even things like how to conduct events in the college. One particular even that comes to mind is the organisation of the ethnic day and cultural fest in which the alumni helped us out heavily with event planning and sponsorships.

Every semester had 3 monthly tests and 1 batch of semster end exams.. Normally, it would be very chilled out except near the 3rd test when a student would need to complete all his assignments, projects, lab works as well as any other internal assessment. However as a general rule: odd semesters would be more hectic than even semesters.

The admission process began with the computerised allocation of seats by the CET cell according to students' merit and preference. This was conducted in 2 phases - First, a mock allocation to help students get familiarised with the process , since we were the first batch to whom the manual process was replaced by a computerised one. This occured in the final week of June. After the mock allocation was over, the actual process occured and soon students were allotted seats by the computerised system. Students who were satisfied with the process could report to the CET cell and pay the prescribed fee via DD to obtain a receipt which needed to be shown at the college for the further process. This process took place in the first week of July. After paying the fee, we were required to go to the college and complete the admission process, This basically meant procuring a bunch of forms from the admin block, filling in my details and paying the rest of the fees to the college via DD and signing some declarations and agreeing to rules. The process was smooth and free of harassment except getting the DD at the bank , since it was crowded with all the people who wanted to get the DD. This process needed to be completed by July 31 accordeing to the CET cell.

The faculty of the college is generally well qualified and i would say more than half of them like their job, which is saying a lot since almost all colleges have staff who are generally disinterested in everything and try to make the student's life hell. Well, such teachers do exist in my college too but they are a rare breed and most of the faculty are generally amiable and believe in giving their best and helping students out however they can.
