Entrance Preview
For Getting admitted into Amrita School of Engineering, I had to take up an entrance exam exclusive to the university. One thing that helped speed up my decision to study at Amrita was the campus. It was green everywhere I turned. We had visited the university in June. So it was monsoon in Coimbatore. The university looked absolutely stunning resting in the foothills of whestern ghats and covered in raindrops and mist. But it wasn't just the campus. The university is an A grade university (accredited by NAAC) and one of the best in south India. It has perfectly qualified professors (everyone into reasearch) and standard curriculum.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course and curriculum prescribed here are standard and exactly what a student needs to excel in his domain of Engineering. Being a EEE student, I can say that we had 2 laboratory sessions every semester in accordance with the theory papers that we were studying. In the first year, they focus on getting our fundamentals strong and then later they delve into the main course of study. As for research, every professor here either has a PhD or is in pursuit of his/her PhD. Also, there are tag groups of different research areas headed by professors and open for students. If students have a really good idea for research and they propose this to the university, they even get funded by the university for taking it further. We have both core and other electives. Core electives are offered during our sixth, seventh and eighth semesters. We can choose depending on our areas of interest.
Internships Opportunities
Yes, our college does provide internships in the final semester of study. The stipend may vary from 10,000-30,000 depending on the company. Even though the college provides a lot of internships, it is the students knowledge and experience that gets him/ her into the internship. A few companies that provided internship this year were Honeywell, Bosch, Infosys, etc.
Placement Experience
Placements are beyond excellent. The percent of students placed last year were a whooping 97%. Also the average offer per student was 2. Amrita brings in a lot of companies and makes sure that the deserving students go into their dream companies and other students also get placed. Many companies have come for placements including Honeywell, Bosch, Amazon, Zoho, Cisco, Infosys, CTS, TCS, MuSigma, etc. The package for IT companies were around 3.3lpa. Whereas for core they went up to 4-6 lpa. With Cisco paying around 13 lakhs.
College Events
There are umpteen number of events celebrated in out college including Anokha(our annual technical fest), Amritotsavam(our annual cultural fest), pongal celebration, Oman celebration, Gokulashtami, club inductions,.etc. Among these Gokulashtami is a huge festival around college. Every department builds a float that is based on an event Mahabharata or from Krishna's life. The best one wins. There are a lot of competitions and cultural activities also along with this event. Next we have our annual technical fest, Anokha. People from all over the country come and participate. We have various events and workshops conducted in all areas with cash prizes. We also have cultural events in the evenings. Amritotsavam, our annual cultural fest also hosts many number of competitions between houses- group dance, light music, group music, writing contests, etc. All these competitions are open to all students and it is up to them to make use of it.
Fee Structure And Facilities
The fee structure is similar to that of any other deemed college. And for the infrastructure and the facililities that they provide here, paying 2.3 lpa is worth it. The mess and hostel fee come to around 50,000. So the dayscholars would have to pay even less. Although they do have to pay their bus fee. But taking everything into consideration, the fee is nothing if not feasible for the quality of education they give.
Campus Life
Amrita has a huge diversity of students from Kerala, Tamilnadu and Andhra. There are also a sprinkling of North Indians. The campus life at amrita is amazing. At least two activities or programs are conducted every month. There are a lot of club activities in the college including - music club(raaga), dance club(Natya), Literature club(Srishti) and a lot more. We have both intra-campus and inter-campus sports meet every year. A talent search is done in the beginning of the year to scout for students who are talented in any area from all departments. Although the make students are a higher in number than female students, we have never had any gender discrimination in the college. We also have a women's grievences council to report any issues but I can guarantee that there has never been any problem. We also have a SC/ST discrimination council. There aren't a lot of parties around campus except a very few DJ nights (that promptly end at 9 pm) now and then. We do have a lot of workshops being conducted that help us improve our understanding of a subject. Most of the time they are free. But at times they cost a little money.
Hostel Facilities
The hostel here is pretty good. There are 4 seater, 2seater and single seater rooms. Cleanliness has never been a problem. The corridors and restrooms are cleaned on a regular basis. We are provided hot water facilities in the morning as the temperature around here tends to run cold. Even though they do not provide non vegetarian food, the food here is quite nutritious and tasty. They offer a variety of food everyday. There are 3 canteens around the campus and nightcanteen inside the hostels.
Alumni/Alumna
There is a great alumni network run by the CIR(Corporate Industry Relations). They make use of this when it comes to placements, internships and higher studies. It isn't transparent to the students. But if a student does go and contact the CIR there is no reason why they wouldn't help.
Exam Structure
The exam is structured in an organized manner. We have two periodicals that repeat after at around 1/3rd and 2/3rds of the semester. It covers the portion till then. After that, we have our end semester. We also have a continuous assessment pattern with frequent quizzes and tutorials. So we need to be prepared on any given day. Making sure to listen to the class helps a lot.
Admission
Like I had already mentioned I had taken up the Amrita entrance examination. The admission process is a rank based system. Now, I hadn't prepared very well for the exam and I hadn't written it well either. So it wasn't a surprise when my rank turned out to be 10,003. But it was a surprise when I was called in for second counseling. When I went there, mechanical and ece departments were already full. I had always been interested in physics, electrostatics and semiconductors and so I ended up taking Electrical and Electronics Engineering. It also has a lot of scope once you graduate. The admission process was pretty simple really. The students were called in rank wise and we were asked to choose the course we wanted.
Faculty
Every faculty here is more than qualified to teach the subject. They have years of experience and they guide us really well. At any point of time if we have a doubt or face any sort of difficulties we are free to approach them. They also offer valuable advice regarding higher education and make amazing project guides. Every faculty opts to teach a course not only because she is learned in it but also because she is interested.
