I took IIT-JEE 2010 and got AIR: 2875. I opted for IIT Kanpur as this is one of the best engineering colleges in India. Academically, It is the most sought after college for a bachelors degree in engineering.
Internships Opportunities
Yes, IITK does provide internship opportunities for interested college students. The stipend varies from discipline to discipline and can be anything between 0 to 5000 per month. Apart from stipend, the learning experience during the internship period would be something to be cherished.
Placement Experience
For a batch of around 1000 people, there are about 250 companies which come for the campus placements. The placement during our time was somewhere around 80%. There are all sorts of companies coming to the campus, ranging from google (offer: 25 lakh), Microsoft (offer: 20 lakh), Facebook (offer: 80 lakh, including perks etc).
Fee Structure And Facilities
The fee structure was around 40000 per semester (including hostel accommodation). It is quite expensive if we consider it with other government funded colleges in India. But the good news is that education loans are easily available. There are also plethora of scholarship opportunities for deserving cadidates, mostly on the basis of their economic status and academic performance.
Fees and Financial Aid
There are a lot of scholarship opportunities in the college for the deserving candidate. I myself availed the SCM scholarship, which is the most sought after scholarship of the college. It is due to the fact that your complete academic fee is relaxed. So, a college fee of 40,000 comes down to around 10,000. It is based on your parents' income status and your academic performance in the college.
Campus Life
Those 4 years went really well, mostly because of the facilities offered in the campus. IITK is arguably the best college campus in the entire country. We have state of the art gym facilities, basketball courts, Football, hockey and cricket stadiums. TT tables, squash courts, indoor and outdoor badminton courts and Olympic level swimming pool.
Alumni/Alumna
The alumni network of IITs is one which you can boast of if you get a chance to study here. Alumni network program is really successful, which binds the college with its alumni. Not only that, we have city-wise alumni chapters not only in India but also in every major city in the world. The seniors are really helpful, irrespective of whether you know them during your college years or not.
Exam Structure
The exams were quite hectic. Most of the courses have one mid-sem exam and one end sem exam. But there are always quizzes(sometimes surprise quizzes) nearly every week. Labs are very tiring but enjoying at the same time. I wouldn't say there was a single week during my stay (4 years) in which there was no labs or quizzes.
Admission
We have to give the IIT-JEE entrance exam. It was a one-day exam with 2 papers of 3 hours each separated by an hour long break. The exam consists of a variety of questions, starting from single answer multiple choice, multiple possible answers multiple choices, one-word answer, matching. Syllabus of the exam is class 11th and 12th Physics, Chemistry, and Maths.
Faculty
The faculty for materials and metallurgy engineering in IIT Kanpur is really the best you can ask for in their respective domains. Most of the faculty members are involved as external consultants for large manufacturing industries of their respective subject matter. Most of them have decades of experience teaching their subjects so, the way they teach those subjects is really quite lucid and easy to follow.
