Entrance Preview

NIFT has its own entrance exam which happens in February every year. I got an AIR for 42. Why I chose NIFT can't be answered very logically, I didn't want to do sheetu everyone else was doing, I can just put it that way and Nift being the best in the course I opted for it.

Course Curriculum Overview

3.5

Considering it is the only institute offering this course in India, there is none to compare. But the subjects thought are diverse, starting from general introduction to art and yarns in the start to moving on to fabrics and then to production.

Internships Opportunities

All the 3 internships during the course are provided by the college. The first one is not paid, but the rest have a minimal stipend.

Placement Experience

4.5

At least for the technology department there has been a 100%placement . Though the salary can vary depending on the company. Also it depends on the demand that particular year. It varies from 3 lpa-12 lpa. Some companies from outside India also come for placements.

College Events

4

The main events were the college fests. One in February which was the nift Mumbai festival and one in December known as converge which is hosted by any nift centre and all the others participate in it. Apart from that there was regular events in college for freshers, Indian festivals, fashion shows, etc.

Fee Structure And Facilities

Fee I would say was towards the higher side considering it is a government aided college. It used to come up to around 60-65 thousand per semester which is around 5 lakhs for 4 years. Apart from which you have to buy a lot of material as it is a design college.

Fees and Financial Aid

There is a wavier in the fee for students below a certain income group, apart from which you can get education loans from banks if necessary.

Campus Life

4

As most of the students (90%) are hostelites, the campus is always lit up with people around. Post 6:30 you can see people playing, shooting, taking pictures, painting, etc. The gender ratio is horrible is almost as low as 2 guys to 10 girls. There were cultural, sports, literary and environmental clubs which organised competitions and events.

Hostel Facilities

2.5

In my time there was hostel only for first year girls, but now a new hostel has been constructed providing everyone staying options ac and non ac according to preferences. The canteen food I'd say is healthy, but not too much to talk about the taste.

Alumni/Alumna

As it is a very niche field the alumni is very connected and helpful. You can find nift alumni in almost all the known companies in the field.

Exam Structure

Exams were 4 times a year, most of which was jury /project based leaving only 3-4 theory papers every semester. There are regular assignments throughout the year which are pre-planned and the dates are mentioned in the year calendar. The marks are a combination of your performance in these assignments and presentations combined with your mid semester and end semester scores.

Admission

The admission process for technology and design are a different. Both have a couple of papers to be cleared, after which the technology ranking is out but the design aspirants have to go through the situation round and PI. After which in June everyone, according to their rankings are invited to Delhi for counselling and offered centres according to their ranks and preferences.

Faculty

3

The faculty have a lot of industry experience along with their degrees. Their inputs are practical and related to the current times. Almost all the material is made by them in form of presentations, hence is easier to understand. You can always approach them for doubts and also mail them with any issues that you're facing.

Course Curriculum Overview:

The creative assignments and learnings of how to think out of the box made me choose this course. The curriculum prepares us well and we learn how to move forward. but the real world is something which we learn only when we enter the field. The teaching methods can improve by introducing more practical engagements and field visits. Frequency of exams are not to much and exams are easy to clear.
