Remarks
I had applied to a number of reputed colleges in Kolkata. However, I preferred Asutosh College to all the other colleges. I was warned by many regarding the student politics present in the College and how it could possibly hamper my degree. Contrary to this, none of the said factors had any effect on my education. I had a very pleasant experience. The seniors were all very helpful. They also have a good infrastructure. All the necessary instruments in the Geography labs are present. However, few books are not available in the Library. But, the teachers try to make up for it by providing the necessary notes. The admission procedure was quite simple. They simply verified my documents and granted me admission. Asutosh College has one of the best Departments in Geography in Kolkata city and I would strongly recommend students to take admission in this College.
Course Curriculum Overview
Geography has always interested me since childhood. Geography is a very demanding subject and requires mathematical knowledge and great observation and precision skills. It arouses my curiosity and I simply enjoy studying it. We had around 42 students in the class. But, not all students had a steady attendance. Thus, around 30 students would be present in the class each day. The teachers are highly trained and help the students in all possible ways. They also encourage the students to take up challenging tasks at college. The teachers are very specific to details and therefore, the assignments need to be completed neatly and within the given deadline. The exams are conducted by Calcutta University and are taken in the months of July (for even semester) and December (for odd semester). However, you hardly get any semester breaks. The syllabus is also huge but standard question papers are set. So if you work hard and study well, you can easily pass.
Placement Experience
There is a placement cell in the College for final year students. Comapnies like TCS, Wipro, CTS, Ranbaxy, Accenture and others visit the College. I would not be able to provide first-hand details regarding the packages offered as I have not sat for the placements. I plan to pursue a Master's Degree in Geography. I plan to enter the education field.
Fees and Financial Aid
The college fee is nearly 6000 to 7000 rupees per year. Separate fees for examination are also taken. There are scholarships offered by the State Government. However, as far as I know, no scholarships were offered by the College itself.
Campus Life
The college conducts its annual fest every year around the month of September. Poster-making contests, Wall painting contests, dance contests, etc. are all conducted. Celebrities are invited to judge the events. The college library does not have a few books. But the teachers make up for it by providing the necessary notes. All amenities in the labs and classrooms including instruments and smart boards are available. The college also conducts inter-department annual football and other sports events. There is also an NCC club in the college. Literary clubs are present in the college.
