Remarks
I applied for many colleges within Kolkata like Asutosh College, Belur Math Vidyamandir in Belur , Scottish Church College. I did not take admission to Asutosh College due to long distance. I also got selected in Belur Math but by then I had already taken admission in Scottish Church because they had published their Merit List earlier. No, I did not avail any quota for admission but my college being a Christian minority college, there is a seperate quota for them along with SC and ST quota. The admission criteria for BSc Computer Science was - one must have Mathematics and either Physics or Statistics or Computer Science as their compulsory subject in 10+2 level exams under any board, the student must have achieved atleast 40% marks in their 10+2 and in Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science.
Course Curriculum Overview
I choose this course because of passion towards Computer Science and programming. Through the curriculum of this course, I will get a deep knowledge about both the hardware working and software working of Computer and also learn about many programming languages. The student to teacher ratio is 30:1 in our department. Most of the teachers are very friendly and are extremely helpful in both academics and personal problems. Especially , our HOD sir is very knowledgable and kind and extremely co-operative. All teachers hold Masters degree either MSC or MCA. One of them even hold Phd degree. The teaching method are quite good except few but that can be manageable by a little extra effort for the student side. The Semester exams are held timely and being CU ( Calcutta University ) paper, it is quite difficult to score high marks but with the new CBCS system, papers have become a bit easier and passing has also become quite easier now.
Placement Experience
The placements offered by the college is not so good but it is quite better than all other undergraduate hons colleges. Companies like TCS, Infosys, Wipro and Amazon visits the campus. But the package offered by them is not good. The average package likes around Rs.1.5-2 lacs/ per annum and the highest package was offered by Amazon was of Rs 2.75 lacs/per annum. I have a plan to pursue MCA from a good university after my Graduation. This will give me more opportunities and higher rank services.
Fees and Financial Aid
The fees of this college is quite higher than all other government aided colleges but not as high as the private instituitions. Every year , the college fees increses by about Rs. 4000. Still, the cost to study is withing the limits. The college offers free studentship to the students having poor financial background by waving their tuition fees. For that, sufficient required documents are needed to be shown to the college authority. The college also provides scholarship to the Chrsitian Students and also the college assist the students in gaining different scholarship issued by the Government. The college offers placement but the package offered on-campus by the company is very low. The highest package was of 3 lac/per annum. Most of the students do not sit for placement and pursue Masters after completing their graduation.
Campus Life
The annual fest of the college is called Caledonia which takes place in the month of January. There are also many tech fest and coding contests conducted by our department throughout the year but most of them are now canceled due to the pandemic. Scottish Church College has one of the largest library and books collections. Several old books can be found in our library. It is a rich source of knowledge for all students. Classrooms are quite airy and spacy with proper desks and chairs. The labs are great with a fully air-conditioned room and all the devices in the labs are working. The college has a seperate field for sports. Every year during the winter, a sports ceremony is organized by the college. Even inside the campus building, students play many indoor games. The college has a great number of societies to explore starting from the Drama Society, Debating Society, NSS Society, Photography society, and many more.
