Remarks
College management was not good at all they needed to be more friendly and more cooerative as there people from all over the country.
Entrance Preview
NIFT has a separate entrance examination like IIT. You give the exam, get a rank and accordingly you can choose which center you want to go to.For my course, which was engineering, you have to give only one entrance exam which included GAT, MAT, higher level Mathematics. For Designing, there is another exam after this which tests designing skills.I always wanted to know the manufacturing process of designer garments on a mass scale keeping all elements intact and that is exactly what this course is about.
Course Curriculum Overview
Year 1:It is pretty similar to everyone in the first year. We had subjects relating to history of Fashion, elements of design, general introduction to computers and different softwares required in this field, and then there were subjects relating to the study of the mechanical processes of the different machinery used in this industry.Year 2,3,4:The subects were relating to: * Garment Manufacturing like Pattern Making, Garment Construction, PAD, etc.* Fabric Manufacturing included in different weaving and knitting technologies * Computer languages like C, C++, Java, Web Designing, etc. which comes in handy later when you design a website for your own brand, etc.* Architectural drawing which helps you decide your plant layout.* Management studies. Which helps you in understanding how businesses work.
Internships Opportunities
Internship was great. It really helps as whatever you get to implement and practically see all that you learnt in college till you went out for the internship.Stipend then was pretty decent. Used to get Rs. 5000 a month plus travelling expenses.Smaller 2 weeks internships do not offer any stipend, but that makes sense.
Placement Experience
Placement is average through college. A lot of good companies like Raymonds and Welspun come out for recruitment. However, by the time you get to final year, and if your work is good, you'd have made a lot of contacts through internships, seniors, etc.
College Events
I was part of the event organising team of the college so we used to host a lot of events like* rock shows* fashion shows* Spectrum (our own fest)* Business meet with various people in the industryParticipation is open for all in these events.
Fee Structure And Facilities
The course is expensive.Sem fees back then was nearly 45 thousand rupees. And then there were security deposits, library fees, etc. which was annually taken. Another 5k approximately.
Fees and Financial Aid
College offers subsidy/scholarship for students with not so good financial background apart from that you could take loans from bank submitting college papers which would cover all fees relating issues.
Campus Life
Gender ratios in any fashion college would be unequal there were more girls than guys the course structure is so huge that it is difficult to indulge in extracurricular but there were a lot of sports competitions among batches and different department's, debates and the likes there were very few parties but grand ones there are people from all over the country so it was a pretty diverse crowd allowing no discrimination towards anyone based on anything.Main star event every year was the inter NIFT festival that happened every year at some center or the other where you get to meet more freaks like you and loads of competitions to try your hand at.
Hostel Facilities
Hostel is only for the ladies no facilities are provided for guys hostel back then was pretty shitty, but the new hostel now is good, I've heard two in a room guys can stay in PG or rent an apartment rent differs from place to place but an average of 2 3k
Alumni/Alumna
Alumni network is good but it is all personal efforts i have peronally not been in much contact with anyone although if you provide your email if to the college you do get updates about college alumni meets, etc alumni meets are fun with good food and various interactive sessions.
Exam Structure
Exam structure was decent some written exams some juries exams as such were not hectic but the work before that was.
Faculty
Faculties were good in my time although since this course is more practical based than theory it depends really on yourself what you want to learn what you dont.
