Nitin Yadav's Review On IIT Kanpur - Indian Institute Of Technology - [IITK], Kanpur

I took IIT-JEE in 2011. I had also took AIEEE-2011 and BITSAT-2011. I had scored 222 marks in JEE-11 and got admission into IIT Kanpur. I only wanted to study in one of the 7 old IITs. Out of these 7, I wanted the one which was near to my home. So I selected IIT-Roorkee, IIT-Delhi and IIT kanpur. Since the course I wanted was not available in Roorkee and Delhi, I opted for Kanpur.

The course structure was pretty good, I think one of the best academic curriculum in India. In first year all the courses were same for all the disciplines. In 2nd year also most of the courses were same for all the students except for 2-3 courses per semester which were discipline specific. In third year all the course were related to your discipline, which gave thorough knowledge of your branch.

Generally for UG students, internship is provided in third year. The college's Students' Placement Office organizes for the summer internships. The total number of companies that visit for internships is about 20-30 % of the total that visit during placements. So not all of the students get the internship. You have to start preparing early if you want to get internship.

Placement is decent with approx 80 % of the interested students getting the jobs. The maximum number was for Computer Science and Engineering, with 100% getting the jobs. The worse was biotechnology, only 77 % getting the jobs. A variety of companies visited which include software, banks, core, PSUs, consulting, Data Analytics, finance and marketing, startups, FMCG etc.

Technical Festival: Technical festival held by IIT Kanpur is "Techkriti". Its an annual technological and entrepreneurial event in which a large number of students participate from national as well as international institutes. Its India's one of the most popular technological festival. Many events take place like lectures from prominent people around the world, workshops, exhibitions, competitions, tech games etc.

The major part of your fees is tuition fees. At my time i.e in 2011, it was approx Rs 70k per annum (excluding mess charges). Mess charges were approx Rs 18k per annum. So you can see the fees were very much affordable. Moreover, if you didn't belong to creamy layer, the college offered Rs. 60K per annum worth of scholarship provided you had done well in your acads.

Major scholarship that I know of is merit-cum-means scholarship. It was given to meritorious students who did not fall in the financial creamy layer category. At my time it was Rs. 60k per annum. Other scholarships were provided to reserved category students such full tuition and mess fees waiver. Easy loan options were also available, but since fees were not very high, not many students took the loan.

We had to qualify in the IIT-JEE. I got 222 marks and since I was an OBC candidate, I qualified in my category (did not qualify in the general category). I got AIR 1791 in OBC category. The organizing institute had provided us all the information on its official website regarding how to start the counselling process.

Faculty is world class. All of them are PhD. Each one of them is well qualified and expert in their corresponding field. All faculty teach with full energy and enthusiasm. They encourage students to ask and clear as many doubts as possible during the lecture period. They provide assignments after completion of each major topic and hold tutorial sessions for assessing these assignments.
