Remarks

I always wanted to pursue PhD and Department of Mathematics & Statistics at IIT Kanpur has some of the renowned faculties in my major who have good international connection. This has really helped me to get good recommendation for my PhD study in abroad. I already have 3 offers from foreign universities and I am going to join one of them this year.

Course Curriculum Overview

5

Student - Teacher ratio in my major is about 7:1. The faculties are very much active in carrying out research work in diverse areas of statistical science. They are dedicated people and are very generous towards students. I know a faculty who spent almost 2 hours after her usual office hours to help me out solving a problem.

Internships Opportunities

5

Many companies do visit the campus for internship opportunities. But since I always wanted to stay in academia, I received an academic internship offer from Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, which I readily accepted. So I am not well aware of internship plcement scenario in the campus. But all the students from my batch who wanted to go for company internships did get opportunity during the summer term of the 1st year.

Placement Experience

4.5

Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, being an institute of national importance, attracts some of the biggest companies during the placement season. People from statistics background need to compete with students from cs, electrical engineering to get placed in big shot companies like Google, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Microsoft etc. One of the most important thing in our placement session is that it is fully controlled by students and professors do not play any role it it. Selected representatives from the student community are responsible for bringing companies into the campus. Last but not the least, people who wants to get placed will definitely get enough opportunities to prove their worth before the companies. Each and every year, my department sees 100% placement in reputed companies. This year the placement somehow got hampered due to the covid and the placement % was around 85-90.

Fee Structure And Facilities

Some category students do get scholarships based on their merits. People from weaker section of the society get financial assistance from the institute itself. There is a one time admission fee and thereafter we need to pay tuition fees and hostel fees every semester. As of now there are no provisions for campus jobs.

Campus Life

5

The atmosphere at campus is ever vibrant. People do participate in lots of activities other than studies. There is a large Student Activity Centre (SAC) in the campus where you can take part in different sports like table tennis, carrom, lawn tennis, basketball, volleyball etc. There are numerous clubs in the campus like astronomical observatory club, hiking club, science clubs etc. You can see people staying awake in the campus till 4AM at night. Above and all, you will never feel bored in the campus.

Hostel Facilities

Exam Structure

IITJAM, 2019, AIR 21

Admission

We did not have any GD, Interview or written test for the admission. We appeared in IITJAM Mathematical Statistics examination. This examination is of 100 marks which is divided into 3 sections, MCQ type, Multiple Select type (MSQ type) and numerical answer type. The difficulty level varies every year. But getting a score above 60 will definitely gurantee you a spot in any of the IITs. Since we did not have any interview kind of thing, I am rating the interview experience as poor.

Course Curriculum Overview:

My Biggest reason to choose this subject to I like art related work,so I choose this subject. One advantage of doing this subject is that along with art,you can learn a lot from other social and cultural aspect as well. There is a need to make some improvements in this subject such a a course should be of shorter duration and the syllabus should be made a little shorter. Whatever the exam, the subject should be made a short subject with less duration and should not be of long duration.
