Admission is done through JEE Advanced. And the branch that you're allotted depends on your rank. The portion includes Physics, Chemistry, and Maths of class 11th and 12th. Also, a person has to have above 75% in boards and clear JEE mains.
Course Curriculum Overview
The mechanical engineering department of IITM offers some courses that are among the best within the world universities at the UG level. The faculty who teach here are basically researchers focused on a particular topic in their field. So you can ask them any doubt and they'll clear it because they have a pretty deep understanding of the topic. Approximately a teacher over 40 students.
Internships Opportunities
The companies who visit for an internship at IITs are far more than the companies who visit for placements at some of the private colleges in our country. Almost half of the people are offered an internship after all the tests and interviews. Profiles vary from software development, consulting, finance, product management, and ML. Most of the companies hire for technical stuff only. People generally start preparing for this about 3 to 4 months ago. For software development most companies require good knowledge of data structures and algorithms.
Placement Experience
As going by the name IITs almost have a record of 100% placements and people are offered at least 1 job is mostly what I have seen. The number of companies who visit here is really very large and the number keeps on growing every year. The highest package goes into crores and the average package would be around 10 to 15 lakhs. People who opt for higher studies do not sit for placements and people who sat for placements are mostly offered a job. I personally haven't thought about whether I would be sitting for placements or opting for higher studies.
Fees and Financial Aid
The fee structure for a person depends on the person's family income. There are various categories in which fees range from 5000 to 100000 per semester. Fees are comparatively less for SC and ST students as compared to the general category. Also, fees for people belonging to families of less annual income are given chances to apply for various scholarships.
Campus Life
The name of the annual fest is Sarang in the name of the technical fest is Shastra. Both this fest are conducted on a very large level and one of the best in the entire country. Also, their library of IITM is one of the largest in the country with almost every facility that you could think of. The departments which are built over 100 years have comparatively old furniture but the buildings that are recently built for example the metallurgy department have really very good facilities. Also, there are more than 20 clubs that run in IITM ranging from entrepreneurship to race car building. Although everything is pretty disturbed because of coronavirus.
Hostel Facilities
In the first year, people are provided sharing room and each room consists of two people one person from north India and the other from South India. The room is really very small, the bare minimum size to hold 2 people and comes with very basic facilities like two tables, 2 chairs, and 2 almirahs and only fan no air conditioning or any other stuff. It gets pretty hot during summers. The mess here is the worst in terms of taste but the quality-wise food served is good. People are provided to choose from North Indian mess or South Indian mess. Hostel and mess registration takes place through an online portal in which we pay our fees also.
