Mayur Rohera's Review On Institute Of Hotel Management - [IHM], Ahmedabad

I love my college for making me the person that I am today. This course and college taught me to survive in the toughest of environment when it comes to professionalism. A child is enrolled in this college and rough and tough man comes out with high potential to win over this world.

JEE was the entrance exam that I had to crack so as to get an admission in one of the many IHMs (Institute of Hotel Management). I scored 5700 in that exam. After our results are declared, we were supposed to travel to Delhi for Counselling.

We had four major subjects Front Office, House Keeping, Food Production & Food & Beverage Services. Every subject had an advanced level in each passing year. By the end of second year, we need to select one of the above as our specialization subject to get placed accordingly.

In the second year of our college, we were supposed to do a mandatory 06 months internship at any reputed hotels whichever we choose. The college did support us to get internship, but we were given freedom of choosing our own hotel in our own preferred city. In those 06 months of internship, we were to spend equal time in all major four departments of the hotel.

This goes for every industry, good grades and knowledge of your field gets you well placed. Star hotels and highly reputed chain hotels visit college for placements. Every hotel has their own set of interview rounds and techniques for different departments. Not only hotels, we have retail giants and aviation industry come at our college for placements.

Back in those days, I belonged to a lower middle class family. Hence the fees was quite expensive to me. In the three years of degree course, I spent almost Rs. 3.9L. This included my one year hostel fees, academic fees, different equipment cost, different uniform costs.

I have no knowledge about scholarships, if any. Yes, loans are available by many banks. Back in those days, Bank of Baroda had set up a small information desk to help us with education loan right in the middle of the campus.

Campus life was really enjoyable. I belong to Ahmedabad and we had only 03 students including me from Ahmedabad. All my other batch mates belonged to different parts of the nation. That enabled me to live a completely different life and it was truly fun getting to know many cultures and languages. There was students from all religions and economical backgrounds. Gender ratio was quite less.

There is an alumni network in place which is very active. This help in many ways.

This course is entirely practical knowledge based. We enjoyed having more of practical exposure in all major four subjects. There was equal share of theory lectures as well as practicals. Exam structure was also the same, 50-50 of theory and practical exams.

We were blessed to have highly experienced and qualified faculty for each subject. Every professor had a first hand industry experience in the subject which they taught us.
