Remarks
I feel that this college needs some serious international collaborations for summer internships & student exchange programs. In the past few years, many people had attempted to strike collaborations, but none of them have been successful. In other IITs, at least half of the students get an opportunity to study abroad while in their B Techs. In our metallurgical engineering Dept., so far only one student has managed an international internship. And the sad part is that our HOD doesn't give a shit about the issue. I once spoke to him on this, instead of considering my suggestions, he got angry at me and refused to comment on this. International Faculty: Most of us might be aware of the fact that reverse brain drain is quite significant in the IITs. They hire faculty from colleges like Caltech, CMU, UMich, UPenn, to name a few. Well, our college doesn't yet have any faculty from the US or even Europe. Instead, we have people with PhD from BIT Sindri & NIT Jamshepur. Unless we have some International Profs, we cannot expect to have any international exposure here and this college is never going to make a mark at the international level. Pedantic and adamant administrarion/ faculty: I think the people out here overemphasize on academics rather than overall personality development. In our department, all the scholarships and merits are conferred to the guys with highest GPAs. The department doesn't play any role in boosting the efforts of those who have a sharp research acumen but may not be performing well in academics. One more thing I noticed recently, our TPO officer has made it mandatory for us to restrict our internships to Metallurgical field. We are not supposed to take up management or financial interns. A friend of mine at IIT Kgp recently got an internship at Barclays caital, Singapore despite the fact that his major is Biotech. Seriously the people need to drop such mentalities and accept the importance of extra-curricular activities apart from your majors. Poor LAN: Pick up lappy and you will know the distressful condition of our LAN. In KGP, the DC speeds rarely goes below an Mbps. Out here it rarely makes it to Mbps. And Dr. N S Rajpoot is totally indifferent to this. No attempts are being made to revamp the LAN. The Director has been in the news so many times for making promises to improve the internet connections. And still no changes have been made till date.

Internships Opportunities
You will need to mail your resume along with a cover-letter to the professors you are interested to intern with. I do not know if any official approach is there but after mailing, you can definitely call them up to let them know about your interests. There are certain things to worry about if you want to go abroad. 1. Your CV - you are in first year and trust me, it is the best time to learn and improvise new things. The toughest job is finding your field of interest. Look for some suitable topics and start reading about them. You will find things monotonous but one. That one thing which captures you most, go ahead with it. Read scientific papers, take some online courses(coursera, edx) and then do small projects to write them in your resume. This way your CV will look impressive with some projects and the professor to whom you are applying will have something to look into you. 2. Whom you want to work with - after building your resume(Do it soon, it's important) go to different universities' websites and search for a faculty who matches your interest. This will take time and you will need to be patient. If you find a professor from a particular university, study his publications and study well about him. You don't want to embarass yourself if something happens later. Look for a faculty in Germany, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong kong. These are ready to work with Indians and you will get a reply from them. If you have your luck, you might get a reply from a US university as well. So, mail them after looking into their profile. (Now, what to write in email) 3. Cover letter - Start with your description and mind it, if its not catchy, professor won't bother to read it further. Describe yourself properly. Then, slowly slip into your interests and why you want to work with him. Tell him you have done your research about him and how both of you are perfect for each other. Tell him how you got into this field and what makes you the one he's looking for. Write about your short term and long term goals. It should be in paragraphs and with flow. Dont write too long. And at last, you need to be patient. If you are not getting a reply, its fine. Don't worry. Proof read your cover letter, maybe something's wrong with it or do more projects. One out of 20 will definitely reply. I mailed around 500 guys and got around 20 replies. DON'T SPAM. Don't just randomly pick out professors and mail them. If you mailed an X from a particular lab, then wait atleast for a week to mail a Y from that same lab. They talk and discuss stuff. Always mention the name in your cover letter. Don't just write "Hello/Respected sir".
Fees and Financial Aid
Thanks for A2A. I can tell about IIT (BHU) Varanasi. Following scholarships are available on the basis of merit(Assuming you are a trying for a scholarship purely on the basis of merit). OPJEMS : The scholarship test happens only for the respective toppers of certain branches and the institute rank holders in selected institutes throughout India. You can visit above link for the scholarship amount (Amount INR 65000 for engineers during my time)and the selection criterion. In IIT (BHU), there is a Tata Steel scholarship, amounting to INR 25000, given to the person who is among the top 5 toppers of the Institute. This was before conversion of IT to IIT. I am not aware if this scholarship is still there. Many of my friends got scholarship amounting to INR 36000 based on their AIEEE ranks/board percentages from CBSE. You can check out this link. I guess they have reduced the per year amount now.(Citation needed) Besides that, a merit award of cash prize 1000 INR is given to the 1st and 500 INR to the 2nd topper of each department. (This was before conversion of IT to IIT when the fees was INR 13999 per semester). Currently the fees is quite high and I am not sure if they have this scholarship in place now. There are some scholarship awards from IIT BHU Global Alumni Association (IITBGAA) each year amounting to INR 1000 given out in various categories like academics/research/leadership/volunteering. Again, I am not aware what are the current policies. These are the ones which I can recall from the top of my head. There would be many others also. You can learn about them from the scholarship section at the Academics department at IIT (BHU) Varanasi if you join there. I will add others if I remember more. Hope above was helpful. Cheers !!!

Hostel Facilities
Food at mess: There are 3–5 mess all of which in ground floor … you can get both veg and non-veg meal at the mess. In a week menu is like this: mon(egg/fish/paneer)->tue(mainly puri)→wed(Chicken/paener)—->thus(puri again) >fri(egg/fish/paneer)→sat(veg)—->sun(Big chicken /paneer as well), both rice and roti are there which ever you prefer. Sun night meal is off….you have to eat outside or stay hungry. The quality of the food is (average<—->good) but not excellent and very bad sometimes and if that happens you can shout at the mess maharaj + force them to make something for you then & there like egg fry or alu fry and one thing what ever happens you will always get “alu fry” at the mess. Conditions of the rooms: Two persons in a same room and the room is little small for two people. Initially the rooms are dusty because of paint work after each year. So you will have to clean the room before start living. You will get One fan ,light holder without lamps ,plug point ,a chair table and bed .some time your table has no drawer or broken table /chair .But dont worry if you say to warden they will replace that. Availability of ground: inside each hostel there are vollyball, badminton court, table tennis ,small garden ground where you can play cricket /football but it is small ground not for playing purpose. But there are lots of big playground inside the campus where you can play all types of sport ,There are special courts for tennis, basketball, football etc . Alcohol consumption: Yes ..some people drinks also… even sometimes mess maharaj or canteen boy or even warden himself sometimes join the alcohol party,But that will be your last night in the hostel. ;) :D :D hope you get an idea !
Alumni/Alumna
Nikesh graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi, India with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering in 1989 . But he did not just stop there, he went on to earn a degree from Boston College and an MBA from Northeastern University. Hmm.... you don't seem impressed by his educational qualification and obviously why would you be impressed ? He is neither from top notch IITs like those of Bombay , Delhi and Kanpur nor he has an MBA from institutes like HBS , Stanford or MIT sloan . But let me tell you , his degrees may not be as impressive ; but honestly , he is actually an exceptional guy . How ? He is the senior vice president and Google's chief business officer and apart from this ; he is Google's highest-paid employee , he received $46.7 million in total compensation in 2012 .
