Remarks
All in all, it was a wonderful experience for me at college. They do grill you a lot here. But when you come through these 4 years of engineering, you are a different person than you stepped in. You could take it all. Your stamina and endurance levels grow much higher. The management is pretty forward-minded and the best part is they are very open to changes and really quick to implement them too. This, I feel is the biggest advantage of studying here.
Entrance Preview
JEE MAIN- 110/360 VITEEE- 8584 rank CUSAT- 1354 rank COMEDK- 2725 rank I was certain to opt for Mechanical Engineering. Considering the fact that my mains score was too poor to get a good college, I had only the other remaining options in my hand. I still feel and can vouch for this that for Mechanical Engineering curriculum per se, I couldn't have landed at a better place. The lab facilities and infrastructural facilities are very good and modern.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course curriculum is well structured and what I personally like the best is that the college makes constant efforts to make the curriculum interesting and more relevant to the current trends in industry. The introduction of mandatory projects in each subject ensures ample opportunities for research work and the efforts are rewarded by the college in the form of a Special Achievers Award on University Day. The electives can be chosen from a wide pool of subjects depending upon your interests. I was especially inclined towards Automobile related subjects and you have 'Automobile Engineering', 'Vehicle Technology', 'IC Engines', etc. which if taken together give you a good command over Automobiles!
Internships Opportunities
From my experience, VIT does not provide internships for outsiders. For students studying in VIT, a 4-week internship is mandatory and part of the curriculum. You have to arrange this yourself and VIT does not help you in this regard.
Placement Experience
Almost everyone gets a regular offer (IT mass recruiters) with a CTC of around 3.3 Lakhs to begin with. After this, you can sit for Dream offers which have a CTC of around 4-8 Lakhs. About 20 - 40% of the batch successfully converts a Dream offer in core branches (Mechanical, EEE, Civil). In noncore branches (CSE, IT, ECE, and the likes) the ratio is higher with about 60-80% getting a Dream job. Noncore branches also have a shot at Super Dream offers with a CTC 8 LPA. The conversion here is 15%. All in all, if you work hard and keep up a good profile throughout B.Tech Placements will excite you.
College Events
Two events are held every year. A cultural event Riviera celebrated in February every year wherein there are performances by some of the biggest singers of Bollywood. We have hosted Mohit Chauhan, Vishal Dadlani, and his Pentagram band, Sunidhi Chauhan, Saleem - Sulaiman, Rannvijay, Farhan Akhtar, Suresh Raina, Ravichandran Ashwin, Chetan Bhagat, just to name a few. On the techno-management side we have a fest called GraVITas held in September every year wherein there are games and stalls to spend time on which also provides a much-needed break from studies.
Fee Structure And Facilities
The fee structure is a bit of a concern since it has become on the higher side after the recent hikes in the past 2 academic years, though this has been the case everywhere from what I have observed. For all of the tuition fee + mess + hostel, it should cost around 12 Lakhs for one to survive. Add to that a pocket money of about Rs.2000 a month and that will be enough.
Fees and Financial Aid
The college does not provide any loans. I did avail an education loan from Bank of India though and the college helps in this regard by giving you a letter that has an estimate of all expenses right on the counseling day itself so that you could start right away with loan formalities. As for scholarships, I only know of a STARS program wherein the college sponsors one boy and one girl from each district in Tamil Nadu who are District toppers in Tamil Nadu State Board.
Campus Life
Campus life is pretty happening if you are actively involved in clubs and chapters. There are 50+ of them, definitely one for all of your interests. There are Car teams, Coder and Developer groups, Toastmasters, NGO's who have different agendas like Education for the needy to care for the poor or blood donation drives. There are also sports teams and music and dance clubs if that is your forte. The Gender ratio is a bit better than other colleges in general. It is about 0.3 females for every male.
Hostel Facilities
Rooms are available in single occupancy as well as shared ranging from 2 bedded to 6 bedded both in AC as well as Non - AC Configurations. This, however, is subjected to availability and the rooms are allotted each year in hostel room counseling which takes place in the decreasing order of CGPA. Rooms are good and housekeeping services are available for free. You just have to call the cleaners and sweepers of your concerned floor.
Alumni/Alumna
The Alumni network is strong and there are some startups started by VITians themselves that visit the campus for recruitments too. There are some occasions where you will get to know of the generous nature of alumni who left college. Contributing books to the college library are one example
Exam Structure
Exams strike just the right balance. They are neither too frequent nor too spanned out. About 3 theory exams are conducted per subject in a 5-month long semester. Labs are conducted once every week and you have 2 lab exams (mid-term and term ends) in a semester of 5 months.
Admission
There's a separate engineering entrance exam called VITEEE held every year in the month of April. Forms can be filled online from February and the advertisement comes out in all leading national dailies. The cost of the form is around Rs.1000/- The exam is fairly competitive and around 2 Lakh + candidates appear every year.
Faculty
The college follows a unique FFCS system wherein you can select your own faculties! In my experience, good teachers are aplenty and easily available. There are people who have done a Ph.D. from IIT's and also some who have studied from Foreign Universities like Duke. You can always feel free to contact them. They moreover are always on the lookout for students who feel an inclination towards research and will be pretty helpful in case you have a good area to work on.
