Remarks
The addmission for B.Tech courses is totally based on JEE Main rank. The seats are allotted through JoSAA and CSAB counselling which starts after some days of JEE advanced results announcement, usually in the month of July. 50% of seats are reserved for the Home state category i.e. if you passed your class 12th from any school inside Tamil Nadu. Category-based reservation is applicable for both Home state and other state applicants. 14% of seats are reserved for female students.
Course Curriculum Overview
I chose Production engineering as it was relatively less hectic as compared to other branches in terms of academic burden. There are a total of 32 faculties in the Production department including HoD, Professors, associate and assistant professors and post-doctoral fellows. A number of students intake for each year in my department is 120+. All of the faculties are well qualified. Most of the new professors have done their PhD and masters from top IITs. The teaching method is classroom based through chalkboards and projectors. Each semester there are two lab courses up to the 6th semester. Labs are conducted in the Production department building for the 2nd and 3rd years and in the central workshop for first year. For almost all of the courses, the evaluations will be based on two class tests, assignments and the End semester examination. The exams are not that hard to score if you focus on lectures. The grading system is relative grading.
Internships Opportunities
The internship process starts in the 5th semester just after summer breaks. This year around 30+ companies visited for on-campus internships related to various domains from management to software. Majority of companies visit for Tech roles. The stipend varies between 2 lakhs to 35,000 / month.
Placement Experience
Placements start from the 7th semester. I can't disclose names and CTC of companies as per TnP rules but the placements this year are extremely good. Last year maximum CTC offered was 78 Lakh and the average of all branches was 15.7 lakhs. For the CSE department, the median CTC was 26.1 lakhs. A total of 627 of 693 eligible students were placed. The percentage of placement was 90%. The median CTC varies between 8.1LPA for Civil to 26.1 LPA for CSE. For production department the highest CTC was 32 lakhs and the average was around 11Lakhs. 51 out of 56 students got placed last year. You can sit for software companies even if you are from the production engineering branch like I am preparing for one.
Fees and Financial Aid
The tuition fee for each semester is Rs 62,500. Annual and festival charges of around Rs 13,000 need to pay one time each year. The hostel rent charge is Rs 11,000 per semester. Mess and hostel establishment charges are around 29,000 for each semester. Students having an annual family income less than Rs 1Lakh have to pay no tuition fee but they are required to pay all other fees If the family income lies between 1 to 5 lakhs the annual fee would be 1/3rd ie. 20833 /sem. NITT provide many scholarships like students aid fund and RECAL every year based on merit and financial condition. The amount may vary from Rs 15,000 to 50,000.
Campus Life
Festember is the annual cultural fest which happens in the month of September. Believe me, those 3-4 days would be the best days of college life. Pragyan is an annual tech fest which occurs in the month of March. The central library has around 1.35 lakh books ranging from science, engineering, philosophy, spirituality, history etc. Journals and newspapers are also provided in the library. The wifi connection is very poor inside the Library. Classes for the first years usually take place inside the Lecture hall complex. It is equipped with AC and projectors. For the rest of the students, classes are conducted in Orion. No AC or wifi are there. The sports complex has facilities for every sport. NITT provide appreciable support for sports and games. Students represent in various sports competitions like inter-NIT, Sparda etc. There are college teams for every sport and entry into them are based on inductions. There are many student clubs and you can try to join any of them based on your interest.
Hostel Facilities
For 2nd year onwards the hostels are two-seaters. You will be provided with a bed, chair, desk, and cupboard. The bathrooms are common for one wing and floor. There is a frequent problem of water scarcity in the Hostels. Sometimes it's hard to find even drinking water. Although 3 washing machines are provided on each floor most of the time it runs out of water. Some hostels need maintenance. If you face any problem with the appliance or switchboard you can complain online through students portal. The mess fee is around Rs23000/sem which needs to be paid in starting of the semester. There is a separate mess for north Indian food and south Indian food. You can choose any of them based on your choice. Currently, there are 2 north Indian messes, 2 south Indian messes, 1 Andhra mess and one Kerla mess { in the boys' hostel zone}. You can change the mess every month based on your taste. Mess food is better than expected but not that good, it completely depends upon which mess you registered.
