Remarks
The University has a wonderful vibe and energy which is well-suited for students to study and interact with. However, student politics is also very strong with 3 leading parties struggling for power. The students will be put under no pressure to participate in such activities against their will. The authority is well-functioning but there is a lot of scope for improvement. All in all, the university provides a great space for students from all cultures and economic backgrounds to come together and study in.
Entrance Preview
The university holds entrance examinations of its own for the course I opted for (English Honours). I scored 75/100 in that entrance test. Presidency University has an exemplary faculty in the English department and is known for its liberal nature when it comes to student participation.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course curriculum in English Honours is one of the best that the country has to offer. The curriculum is divided into 6 semesters of six months each. Each semester will have a new syllabus.Along with the honours subjects, the students will also have to opt for a certain number (depends on which semester the student is in) of Gen Ed subjects which must include at least one cross-stream subject (i.e. Science).
Internships Opportunities
The college provides a stipend in Ph.D. courses which may be approximately 10,000 to 12,000/month. The candidate also gets to interact and work with some of the best professors in the field thereby garnering more work experience and learning work ethics.
Placement Experience
Since the university does not provide engineering courses or commerce courses, there are no placements held on the campus.However, every passout student has the required knowledge and skill to find employment in areas of their interest after their successful graduation (in their field) from the university.
College Events
Presidency University keeps bubbling with activities every other day. there are lectures, seminars, and talks happening every month, wherein professors from all over the country are invited to speak in their areas of expertise. Along with that, there is a Dance Society, a highly celebrated Debating Society, and a Drama society which caters to the students with a bias for cultural activities and debating.
Fee Structure And Facilities
The fee structure in the university is consciously subsidized so as to accommodate students from all backgrounds based solely on their merit. The examination fees and the tuition fees are to be paid every six months. The fee structure for B.A. honors in English comes to approximately INR 1,115 per year.
Fees and Financial Aid
There are no such scholarships and/or loans that I am aware of. Although, the university does give scholarships to students of merit in fields of science.
Campus Life
The gender ratio in the university is well balanced with an almost equal number of girls and boys in the campus. There are several workshops held throughout the year, which include dance and debates extensively. The Presidency University Cricket, Football, and Table Tennis teams are quite strong and participate in inter as well as intra college competitions. The student diversity is not so much but there is no distinction or differentiation practiced on the basis of gender, ethnicity, race, religion, sexual orientation, politics, or economic status.
Hostel Facilities
The university offers a hostel, but only for girls. The hostel fees along with food are kept at INR 1300 and provided on a first-come-first-serve basis.The hostel is located in Salt Lake City, one of the most elite societies of Calcutta. Full security is approved and students are provided transportation to the university by buses.
Alumni/Alumna
The seniors are extremely helpful and supportive. They always provide the necessary help to the juniors whenever needed and are always willing to provide support in any situation which calls for it.
Exam Structure
Exams are very relaxed in the university.Since the examination system is that of semesters, students get enough time to cope up with the latest studies and deliver their best in the exams. In case a student is absent or does not perform well in one semester, he/she will be given an opportunity to give another exam in the next to next semester on the previous syllabus, along with the present.
Admission
The application forms were available online right after the HSC exams were over. One has to apply with all the required details, appear for an entrance test, the admit card for which will be given online. After qualifying in that test, students need to clear two lists- one based on the admission test marks and the other on the HSC exam marks. On clearing both, his/her name will be displayed on the merit list and will be given admission according to the number of seats available.
Faculty
The faculty of the college is arguably one of the best in the country. They teach with the utmost care and have the best of qualifications. Extra care is taken by the professors to reach out to every student so that there is equal treatment to all.Some of them are gold medalists in their subjects with more than 20 years of experience. The university also holds lectures, seminars, and talks wherein professors from other universities in the city and the country are invited to speak on a certain topic which falls under their specialization.
