An insight into IITK

IITK is a brand in itself. Great opportunities and great minds meet here.The campus is one of the most beautiful place that you might find in indian colleges. The passion and the will to accomplish comes from the very fact of atmosphere in the college. The college management is very helpful and conducive towards betterment of the students.

I took JEE Advanced and secured a rank of 2060. I choose IITK because it was known for its academics and had world class infrastructure of labs and other student activites.

The course curriculum is enriching not only in your field but you get to have a glimpse of every-other department by doing some basic compulsory courses. Keeping in mind the people going for jobs or research, the curriculum is great as it includes a variety of theoretical as well as software related courses.

The college has Placement and training office which works really hard to make internship opportunity to the mass. The internship is not a compulsory one and only those willing , sit for the same. A great lot of students get opportunity to work as an intern in the likes of big firms like nomunra,american express, goldman sachs, microsoft,liknden,facebook,accenture,walmart,DeShaw,ITC and many more. Stipend varies greatly from 1.5 lakhs to 20 thousand.Generally its around 30,000 to 40,000 INR. People are very happy with the internships and the exposure they acquire from it.

Again the Placement Office of IITK provides the final year students the opportunity to get placed on-campus in a large variety of firms ranging from investment banks, IT sector, Core sector, Financial services and Consulting as well. Companies like Microsoft,PwC DIAC, EXL,TATA Motors,Air Bus,Bank of America,Tower Research,Walmart Labs,ITC,Amazon,Mitsubishi,ISRO,Axis bank and many more names to count. They generally offer 15 lakhs while it shoots up for the big techs to 70-80 lakhs. Almost everyone gets an on-campus placement.

Techkriti is the annual technical fest, with a budget of over 2 crores.The festival is held over four days every March, attracting footfall of over 40,000 from around 1400 colleges all over the world.Eminent personalities like Richard Muller,Dr. Hamid Karzai,David J Griffiths and many more have been a part of it. Various competitions like robotics,astronomy Antragini is the annual cultural fest and has attracted a huge number of people and some eminent celebrities like Sonu Nigam ,Poets of the Fall, Adnan Sami , Sunidhi Chauhan, Piyush Mishra and many more. This is also a 4 day fest with various competitions in singing, dancing , dramatics , art and many more.

IITs are known for affordable fees and education here being subsidized by the government is within the limits of common folk. For 1st semester the fee for 2014 &2015 batch it is Rs. 59,367 and for 2016 it is 1,14,367 while for the 2017 batch it amounts to Rs 1,24,317 , all these are for general category and the amount is less for the OBC/SC/ST categories being nill for the most economic backward class. Various scholarship like INSPIRE , FBM , Merit-cum-means is provided to the institute.Apart from this there is a student benevolent fund to support the students financially. INSPIRE is for the students pursuing science courses like physics,chemistry,mathematics and earth science. Merit-cum-means is to help the students having poor financially status at their homes i.e. the parents income is less than a certain amount.

The gender ratio lingers around 1:8 for the undergraduate students i.e. for each girl we have around eight boys. Campus life however is just superb. We have a wide variety of food outlets being it Dominos, Urban Crave , CCD and some local vendors as well. Every hostel has a canteen which remains open till 2am. The people here are from various background and posses various talents. Campus provides a platform for students to come up and take part in technology , cultural and innovative events. Not only there are fests but intra IIT competitions between hostels. Here at IIT we have robotics club, SAE , under-water vehicle club, electronics club , debating society, and various other clubs which take part in various competitions held across globe. The labs have world class infrastructure and facilities. We have a wind tunnel and air-strip as well.

The hostels are well maintained and provide with various sports facilities like basketball courts, badminton courts, volleyball courts,table tennis and organize a cricket league for the residents of the hostel. The rooms are sharing as well as single occupancy.The rent is included in the semester fees and just the monthly mess bill has to be paid.We have reading room with a fair amount of books and subscription to numerous magazines and newspapers apart from this we have computer room, TV room where its thrilling to watch cricket matches. The mess food is quite nice, the mess committee ensures the quality of foo by keeping a watch on the quality. Mess is clean and the workers are very gentle nature serving you food with a smile.

The alumni network is great as there is a good interaction of seniors even with the first year students which is generally not seen in general at other colleges. The bonds formed are not as seniors but more of as friends. Seniors are helpful not only in studies but all aspects be it sports or cultural activities or personal advice. They support being in campus and even when they are out in the professional world they are ready to help their college and the students in hour of need.

We have a semester of 4 months with few quizzes,a mid term and an end term exam.Some of the subjects have assignments while some have labs and some both labs as well as assignments. There are not too many classes in a day so not really that hectic but the days which have labs are quite hectic. The structure is really nice as a constant evaluation is done through quizzes and labs provide the necessary practical knowledge.

I has been three years but still i remember the excitement of waiting in queue to get my name registered in IITK. Admission in the IITs is through JEE where you qualify Mains and then take Advanced exam to get a seat in IIT. Admission procedure starts after All India ranks are declared followed by filling of choices for colleges and departments. Once allotted, you have to go to nearest IIT to get you verified. You can either float or freeze the seat allotted to you or continue with the other rounds and then latter take admission,.

The faculty is really well and have keen interest in what they teach, moreover they are highly qualified as almost all of them have done Ph.Ds from abroad and returned for the sake of teaching and contributing in development of India. The faculty not only teaches the student on campus but is associated with the NPTEL programme of MHRD which lets them share knowledge to the people with less opportunity.
