Remarks
This college is strictly for people who are looking for a degree and then planning to get into research work. There is very little practical knowledge you can gain here. Its not the ideal college atmosphere, however if you start to enjoy it once then you can understand how easy it is to curve the rules a bit and make the most of your college life.
Entrance Preview
Walk-in Admission. In 2008 donation seats were available and I had to pay certain amount to get admission. Did not matter how much you got in your +2 examination. Later, the university started its own entrance exam. However, I'm not sure of how many candidates would actually get seats through it.
Course Curriculum Overview
The focus here is on theory. There is very little practical knowledge that you gain in Sathyabama University. Many of the teachers were not fluent in English language and that made students difficult to understand the subject specially for those students who did no know Tamil knowledge. Unknowingly there was a fear of pressure in students in doing small things like asking doubts in practical classes.
Internships Opportunities
No! You need to earn or find your own internship specially to complete your final year project. You are not paid and in many cases you need to pay the organisation to help you finish your research on time.
Placement Experience
Placements and jobs are decent provided your marks are good. However, the college does provide good coaching for students who are eligible to sit for campus placements. Most of the company's recruiting are from IT sector.
College Events
Girls in college are exposed to more cultural activities than guys. In my four years, I saw only two cultural activities for guys. However, you are more than welcomed to take part in events happening in other colleges. You are provided with ON DUTY attendance for days you decide to go to other college for cultural or sports events.
Fee Structure And Facilities
Fee structure is very reasonable as compared to the other rival colleges like SRM university. The fees includes bus services and the students were provided with breakfast, lunch for which they weren't charged extra. Extra fees included examination fee for every semester and appears exam fees.
Fees and Financial Aid
Christian minority students did have some concession in their fee structure. College did encourage lot of research work and paid for students to travel to international destinations for presentations on their research work.
Campus Life
In my department of bioinformatics saw more girls and less guys opting for this course. My batch had students from all over the globe and it was a decent blend of various backgrounds coming together on this huge platforms. There were occasional paper presentation and lot of sudden questions and answer rounds.
Hostel Facilities
I did not stay in hostel so cannot comment much but I heard that hostel life was very strict and getting out from hostel was very difficult. Hostel warden had the power to check any rooms and students were not allowed to carry mobile phones as well. Once a week there would be movie screening. Food in the campus was decent and quantity was unlimited.
Alumni/Alumna
Not really! I'm not aware of any alumni network. My college called us back just once in 6 years that I've passed out on.
Exam Structure
Very hectic. two sets of internal exams, 2 semester exams per year that includes 7 theory subjects and 4 practical subjects. You internal marks are also considered in semesters and if you need to clear you arrears or back logs if any before 6th semester if you intent to sit in campus placement.
Admission
Admission process was quite simple, I went and met the director of the college and showed him my mark sheets, he further sent me to a small office were a the ''management seat'' fees was collected. The first notification released by the college had my name on it. You then have to go and meet you HOD who will make you meet you batch's counselor and he/she will collect the required documents.
Faculty
The faculty is helpful and can be a friend to a student but management does not allow this to happen. In the name of discipline the college promotes strict and stupid rules that make the student purposely either come under pressure or rebel (in some cases) against the faculty. Few subject teachers are really good, but practical subjects like Math or statistics department are really poor.
