Remarks

The management is extremely slow to implement ideas of students. Things have not yet been digitized and one needs to get a paper signed by at least 5 people before you can get something approved. Otherwise they are friendly and open to suggestions

Entrance Preview

I wrote BITS and IITJEE. Opted for Mech at IIT Madras because thats what my rank fetched me. I would've opted for IIT Bombay or Delhi if I had gotten it. It is the general perception that these were the best colleges, so naturally I would opt for it!

Course Curriculum Overview

3.5

The course curriculum is pretty much the same in any university if you take Mechanical engineering. But from the point of view of higher studies it does a pretty good job as one can breeze through exams like GATE after this. But job employ ability wise IITM ranks way below other top IIT's

Internships Opportunities

Yes they do at the end of your third year. Internships are pretty easy to get and since they have made it compulsory to do one, everyone finds one way or another to get it done. I was one of the lucky ones who ended up in an FMCG, so got paid well. But generally one can expect the living expenses to be covered and if one is thrifty, may even save 5-6k

Placement Experience

3

Pretty bad from what I hear from batch mates and seniors. Since I am not sitting for placements I can't say, but it seems like a scam. ALL the exams take place in a very unprofessional way and the resume shortlists are kinda random. But compared to other colleges, some big companies at least show up.

College Events

4.5

We have the well acclaimed Saarang and Shastra which are our cultural and technical fests respectively. They are pretty big. The spons teams boasts 80000-100000 footfalls for some of the events, but who knows how they calculate such tings huh. Other than these we have department level fests which can be a good way to earn a few extra bucks

Fee Structure And Facilities

Fee structure is very affordable since it is a central govt institution. But recently the 100% fee hike made it really expensive. But not to worry, scholarships are available if you have a certificate showing your household income to be less than a certain amount.

Fees and Financial Aid

There is something called the MCM scholarship which is disbursed to students whose household income is lesser than 5 LPA. There are other merit based scholarships which are hard to get, but hey if you have the brains there is a window!

Campus Life

4

Gender ratio in mtech: 1:50. Its pretty sad and one does tend to get sexually starved. Diversity is assured since you have students from every corner of India. There are also around 50-60 exchange students from different European countries. There is in no way any discrimination based on race religion or sex. Parties are a very common thing but they are within groups of friends.

Hostel Facilities

4

The hostels are so so. You can live comfortably in a single room with all the privacy you need We have a small cricket/ football ground, volleyball court, basketball court and shuttle and table tennis areas. The food does not suck and is edible. Being healthy and hygienic is all they can ensure, taste wise its hard to make delicacies for the 100 Rs we pay per day

Alumni/Alumna

We have an alumni club and an IAR that handles all alumni affairs. They are very helpful as they not only give advice on placements, exams etc. but also fund your foreign travels if you cant afford them. Seniors are useful if you go mingle with them. Recently sure to the crackdown on bullying/ ragging sessions there seems to be lesser interaction between juniors and seniors.

Exam Structure

Exams are hectic when you study for them in the eleventh hour. I would say college life is very chilled out and I hardly had to put any effort to be an 8 pointer. Labs were a joke here since I hardly attended any and those are probably the only courses which got me S grades

Admission

Once you clear the JEE advanced and get your rank, you will be asked to fill in your preference order of universities and branches. I selected CSE at Bombay, Delhi and Madras as my first option although I knew I wouldn't get them

Faculty

3.5

Some are good, some are bad. No way to generalize them. But if you make sure you do a few projects under the good ones, then theirs nothing like it. IITM is supposed to be re known for its mechanical department and some claim it is the best in all IIT's. I cannot disagree since I don't know how the profs are elsewhere.

Specific schedule is not followed in college regarding the academic and co curricular activities. Sudden decisions will be taken by the management which is a bit difficult for the students and faculty too. There were times where faculties are fed up of management rules and decisions.

Placement Experience:

1.) Placement begins from the pre-final year and we are allowed to apply for companies from the final year. 2.) Around 70% of the class gets placed in reputed companies with an average CTC of 4-8 LPA. 3.) Along with core biotech companies, many IT companies are also hiring students at a very decent package. 4.) I plan to pursue a master's after this course.

The students become elgible for placements right from the 5th semester of their course work. The students who have no standing arrears become elgibile in the first place. There are many companies visiting the college where Infosys, Cognizant, Virtusa are the mass recruiters. The are many other companies like TCS, Wipro, Zoho etc. visiting the college placement drive. On overall 90% of students gets placed every year. The highest package of 25lakhs per annum was offered by amazon for 3 students. My plans after getting degree is to get placed in any of the company.
