Remarks

College is nice, the infrastructure is old. I think a bit more focus on the infrastructure can help it look better, which I think they have already started, because last time when I was in Bhubaneswar, the entry point was looking different. I also feel that some professional short-term courses should be made a mandatory part of the regular curriculum, and the placement camps should be frequent and umpteen. And, a bit more engagement of the students with the community development related activities would also be better.

Entrance Preview

It is the top college for general degree courses, I had appeared for the college's entrance exam. That time, they had a system of taking 50% of weight-age of the academic scores + 50% for the performance during the entrance exam. I had applied in both Science and Arts. In Arts exam, my rank was 101 (overall) and for the Majors selection for English, I had secured 4th rank (for the majors selection). I think 20-25,000 students had applied in the Arts' subjects (as I can recall somebody saying that). During finals of Graduation, I had secured a position in the Best Ten of English Hon ours (6th or 4th rank, not able to recall exactly)

Course Curriculum Overview

5

Well, I had taken 3 things into consideration, after discussing it with my parents, that time: For Majors: Firstly, whether or not the subject interests me because this will decide my longevity in the subject and my performance. Secondly, whether the same has a scope for job with a good pay scale. If it doesn't have that huge scope as expected then which other subject (which is also of your interest area, if not 100% then at least 80 percent) Thirdly, one can do a bit of homework about the faculty from the acquaintances or so. This will give one an idea about the way of teaching. For Electives: I had chosen those subjects that would be helpful when appearing for the competitive exams. You can only choose two electives (one for the first year and the other for the second year). Since Indian Polity and Sociology help in enhancing the outlook and knowledge of the world, I had opted for these two subjects. Else, one can also opt for other subjects like Psychology, etc. Before choosing the subject, one should also check which subject fetches good numbers. Tally the highest scores secured in the past by the seniors. The student will be asked to select the electives after admission, so he or she will have ample time and chance to research (interact with the seniors) and decide.

Internships Opportunities

If one wants to join any internship, the he or she first needs to discuss with the faculty of the respective department. The faculty and placement cell's people can help in arranging the internships, if consulted. They might also assist in getting the internship letter, if consulted

Placement Experience

3.5

Several companies and organisations do approach the college for the intake. They also set up stalls in the campus, at times, for face-to-face interview. Else, sometimes, they also approach individual departments that they feel would be useful, to select the students for placement. The faculty and placement cell help in arranging this, if consulted. Additionally, one can also get trained in some professional courses that are provided by the college to enhance their chances of employment.

College Events

4

Annual Day, Independence Day, Republic Day, Election campaigns and oath-taking ceremony, Welcome Party for the Freshers Farewell Party for the Seniors Inter-College Sports Tournaments/ Matches These are some of the events that I can recall attending. Those events that are specific to a department were having less footfall, and the rest specific to entire college, obviously has a huge footfall and bigger space.

Fees and Financial Aid

There were various scholarships available for the good scorers. In fact, I think, though not sure, during the process of admissions, some privilege are given to the sc/st and low income group.

Campus Life

4

Campus life is decent and happening too, if the student gels easily with others. There are basketball practices, football matches, cricket play, simple chatting, discussions on topics, and so on. Gender ratio would vary a little like boys:girl maybe is like x+1:x. I'm not sure though, because in my group of friends I had equal number of both. Yes, one thing could vary as certain subjects are more preferred by the girls or boys, then that department may have those ratios with drastic change. Else, as far as I have seen it has been in equal no.s + we have never faced any gender biases by anyone even. A lot of extracurricular/ Workshops/ Professional courses take place. One has to keep a tab on it every time by checking the notice boards.

Hostel Facilities

4

Hostels are popular for their food menu, which is what, in a way, makes students realize the value of the home-cooked food. However, the hostels here, I wouldn't say have great menus, but decent ones with average taste. But the most important thing is their hygiene and quality control, which is met, all the time. There are regular inspections even.

Alumni/Alumna

My seniors were very friendly and helpful. In fact there was a point when that line of demarcation of seniority and junior-like feeling had vanished, because we gelled so well. Our seniors had provided us with reference notes, previous years' question papers and mental support as well. Alumni network is good. Every year, there is an annual meet-up. I have not been to attend them yet since I stay in a different state now. However, we are in through our individual social media platform and FB groups.

Exam Structure

As I have mentioned the faculty are well qualified and have a different style of teaching. They are also supportive and helpful. But they are very particular about the attendance and discipline. Because classroom teaching is very helpful. If one is attentive in the class, then he or she will not have struggle much for the exams. Ideally, a day in the college is not that hectic. And, it has a well-planned structure of study, even. Labs are not highly advanced though, but it has sufficient resources to teach and help the students to make advancements in their course. We had two internal exams of 20 marks: one before mid-semester and the other before finals. It had a few 5 marks questions, and one or two long questions. Half the preparation gets done during the preparation of internals. 50% weight-age of these exams is added to the final performance. Final exams, usually have long questions and 5 marks questions serving as the short answers. One needs to set a timer and also work on the writing speed. Respective teachers will also counsel the student, if the student has scored less, to understand his or her problem areas. If the student can do better what he or she has scored, then also they will give assistance. The faculty also ease your problems by sharing some reference books and notes. One can get the previous years' question papers from the library and seniors. It has a huge well-stuffed library for every subject, that will make you feel greedy to drown in the books.

Faculty

4.5

All of them are well qualified and have a different style of teaching. They are very supportive and helpful. They are very particular about the attendance as well. But classroom teaching is immensely helpful. If one is attentive in the class, then he or she will not have toil for the exam. Lecturers of my majors were interactive and friendly with the students. They used to guide us about the further studies and work options. Never did I hear anything different from my experience, about the faculty of other subjects.
