Remarks
Good remarks are most of what I have for this wonderful place. But one thing that could change is the extreme filtering method used by the Communicative English Department. If you want to take up PyEC, you better be up there coz this according to the Dept head is meant only for a certain class of students. Even if you clear the interview with the principal, you may not clear the interview with the HOD here.
Entrance Preview
The Bachelors of Arts did not require any form of entrance test or exam. However, this institution was my dream college since I was a kid and getting in here would mean the best that any student can get when it comes to education. I was keen on Journalism and Literature and had always wanted to pursue my career in the same, and my first preference always was MCC.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course structure seemed very well tailored to what we needed to learn at various stages. The syllabus was well updated with the latest and we had excellent faculty to guide us through. The curriculum laid a solid foundation to help us decide on our future education as well. Although the bachelor's degree does not consist of a research paper as such, we were expected to do our own research for almost all the subjects at various stages. English Literature required us to study and compare various authors and literary personalities over the world. Journalism involved the students in projects where we had to do research on media policies, politics etc Psychology got us to study various case studies and other research papers for particular cases.
Internships Opportunities
No, but they do assist in finding one if the course demands or student insists. I'm not aware of the stipend however.
Placement Experience
From a class of 60, around 35 applied and about 15 students cleared the interview with various companies, and had an offer letter in hand in under a week's time. Some of the companies that came in were Cognizant, Goldman Sachs, Yahoo, Google, DNA, Advertising firms, and few others. The average package ranged between ₹1,50,000 to ₹2,00,000.
College Events
MCC is undoubtedly one of the most happening colleges in bangalore with the number of events taking place there. The college conducts a whole bunch of fests, the names of which I cannot recall now, but are spread out in all the fields possible. There are cultural fests, literary fests, sports fests, management, fashion, etc. The participants are students from all over the nation. Apart from the inter-college fests that creates a buzz, they also host a variety of fests internally conducted by each department.
Fee Structure And Facilities
The fee structure is very affordable considering how prestigious this institution is. The yearly fee for BA Journalism was ₹18,000 in 2006 which is very nominal considering how expensive other private and professional colleges are. The fee needed to be paid at the time of admission and at the beginning of a new year. For the quality of education one receives here, the fee is very nominal.
Fees and Financial Aid
I believe the college does offer scholarships to soome handful of deserving students but I haven't received one and nor have any of the people I know. I'm not sure of the amount granted however.
Campus Life
MCC is an all-women's college, for those of you who didn't know. The college however does have occasional male lectures and they are well accepted by the department and students. There is a students union which is a very strong and powerful association that make a lot of the decisions and also conducts fests and other activities. The members are elected by the students themselves. Independently, classes have the freedom to conduct elections to form representatives who then help in having class events and celebrations etc. Classes often have fresher's special, ethnic day, festival-wise celebrations, send-offs etc. Departments invite various industry professionals to conduct workshops that students can gain knowledge from, this is a regular activity here. When it comes to sexual orientation and discrimination, the faculty and students have a very broad and modern mindset. One faculty we had did in fact have a varied sexual orientation preference, but this never got in the way of anything, and the faculty was well accepted by the class and respected too. With my personal experience I know for a fact that the college doesn't discriminate by political or economic status. They provide high-quality education to all deserving students.
Hostel Facilities
The MCC campus hostel is extremely hard to get in since the beds are not that many and the demand is very high due to out station students. The college has a sister hostel, about 5km away that one can try for too, however my due to my late decision this hostel was filled up too. This forced me to look for PGs around the college area. PG costed me ₹2800pm for a triple sharing, however a double sharing would cost ₹3200pm. There is also a security deposit of ₹10,000 at the time of admission. This did not include any food but a mini kitchen, fridge & microwave were provided along with laundry services. The rooms and bathrooms were cleaned on a daily basis. We relied on dabbawalas for breakfast and dinner and it costed roughly around ₹350pm. Thee food provided was of very good quality, hygiene and quantity as well. There also are plenty of restaurants that you can eat from in that area.
Alumni/Alumna
The alumini of the institution is rather strong and humongous with a formal committee heading it. The association conducted periodical meet-ups for everyone to interact. I personally haven't kept in touch with my seniors as much as I have with my classmates. My classmates, we even now hang out once in a while. I've made some very good friends while in MCC
Exam Structure
No one t wasn't too hectic until the final year. The main exams were well timed being once in approximately 6 months with 2 to 3 internal exams in between. Apart from this, each subject required us to do numerous projects on a monthly basis that kept us on our toes. Psychology had lab hours usually in the afternoons for 3 to 4 days a week, and we always enjoyed them!
Admission
The institute is famously known to have a high cut-off percentage when it came to admissions. Me being an average student had very little hopes on getting in here. But with a positive attitude I procured the admission application along with a friend and submitted it to the concerned department. It's been over 10 years now and I fail to remember the exact details, but I remember that my parents and I were told to bring all the originals and meet the principal in person on a given date. During the interview the principal reviewed my particulars and spoke to me asking about my keenness and interest. Since it's a prestigious institution and getting in was difficult, many had told us that we may need to give them some donation, and my father was prepared with it. We offered the principal and to our surprise she declined it! We thought we may not get in since my grades weren't too good. We were asked to get back after a few days. And to our surprise I got through the prestigious Mount Carmel College!
Faculty
I'd say we had the best faculty ever. The experience, patience, dedication and knowledge they had was truly inspiring and motivating for us as students. Some of them with decades of experience made some of the most boring subjects the most interesting! The faculty always came in to the class with keenness to share information and teach those who were truly interested. By this I mean, those who were in class to while away time could walk out if they wish to, but the teacher would dedicatedly continue teaching those interested.
